【Sydpost】本报13日讯，昆士兰州最多元文化的选区Stretton即将赢来补选。前任议员Duncan Pegg在与癌症坚强抗争18个月后不行离世，ABC等多家媒体都对这位在社区内饱受爱戴的议员进行了报导。这位议员在生前与自己的得力助手，也是本次补选的工党候选人James Martin，对Stretton选区的未来制定了发展计划。昆士兰州州长Annastacia Palaszczuk, 与澳大利亚第26任总理陆克文都曾发声支持这位勤勉的工党候选人。本报记者有幸采访到了补选候选人James Martin。

记者：Can you please introduce yourself and Stretton electorate to us?
您可以向我们介绍一下您自己和Stretton选区吗？
James Martin:I live on the southside with my wife Stella and son Ollie. I grew up in Acacia Ridge, where my parents Bob and Lesley still live today.
I worked closely with Duncan Pegg MP since he was first elected to Parliament. Representing community members and organisations – helping them get the assistance and representation they deserve.
Duncan’s hard work and commitment to his community is well known in our local area and I have been there every step of the way. Fighting for quality schools, health care, better roads, and public transport.
For many people in Stretton which is the most multicultural electorate in Queensland they have family overseas.
And when talking to residents I have listened to their stories about their family members and loved ones overseas and how COVID has spread and ravaged their communities.
But also talking to residents and one thing comes up time and time again – and that is the amazing work our Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and how she continues to keep Queenslanders safe.
The Palaszczuk Government is working hard to rebuild our economy and create local jobs.
Our community needs a local member who will work with Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk to deliver our fair share.

James Martin：The reason for this by-election is a sad one, our good friend Duncan Pegg has passed away following his 18-month battle with cancer.
When Duncan retired, he asked that I run to continue his legacy for Stretton.
This includes:
Delivering quality schools, including new classrooms, performing arts centre, solar panels, security fences and air conditioning.
Delivering quality health care to ensure our health system looks after our local community.
Delivering better roads and public transport, with major upgrades to the Logan and Gateway Motorway and Beaudesert Road.
这一次补选的原因令人悲伤，我们的好朋友Duncan Pegg (Stretton前议员) 在与癌症抗争18个月后离世了。
Duncan卸任时请求我参加竞选，继续他在Stretton选区的工作, 其中包括：

记者：Why did you join the ALP? Why not the LNP or the others?

James Martin：I grew up in Acacia Ridge after my parents emigrated from England with my dad Bob, mum Lindsey and younger siblings Patrick and Sarah.
My family didn’t have much money growing up but my parents worked hard in life to provide for us.
They also valued education, which is core value of the Labor Party. I was the first in my family to attend University, there I meet Duncan Pegg who got me involved in the ALP.
I joined the ALP because I believe every person should have access to quality healthcare and a quality education. I also did not support the LNP’s views on deals with One Nation.
我的父母从英格兰移民，我从小在Acacia Ridge长大，与我的父亲Bob、母亲Lindsey、弟弟Patrick和妹妹Sarah一起生活。在我们长大的过程中，我的家庭并不富裕，但我的父母勤勤恳恳工作抚养我们。他们十分重视教育，这也是工党的核心价值。我是家里第一个大学生，我在大学里认识了Duncan Pegg，在他的影响下我加入了工党。
我加入工党是因为我相信每个人都应当获得高质医疗和教育资源。我也无法认同自由国家党与一国党的一些合作。
记者：Do you have some special commitments for Stretton?
您对Stretton选区有没有特别承诺？
James Martin：My commitment is to work with our Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk MP to deliver our fair share of services for the Southside.
Our priorities are clear:
Delivering better healthcare for Southsiders, with nearly $30 million of upgrades to the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Hospital.
Upgrading local roads to help residents get where they are going faster, including a $30 million upgrade to Beaudesert Road and Illaweena Street.
Investing in schools to ensure local kids get the best opportunities, including more than $10 million to build new classrooms at Stretton State College.

记者：What do you think of the LNP’s misuse of your good bloke and colleague Duncan’s photos?

James Martin：Duncan’s family has suffered a terrible loss. I’ve had the pleasure of knowing the Pegg Family for 20 years – they are caring, talented and intelligent family.
The family has provided a statement about their views on the LNP candidates as per below. I support the request from the Pegg family.
“We are deeply distressed that the LNP candidate is sending out misleading campaign materials with our son and brother Duncan Pegg in them, implying Duncan supports him in the upcoming by-election,” the family said.
“We request that the LNP respect the memory of Duncan and stop the candidate misusing our son and brother’s image.”

记者：As we know, Stretton is the most multicultural electorate in Queensland. How did you and Duncan take care of the multicultural communities in Stretton? How will you do it in the future (any changes)?

James Martin：In Duncan’s last speech in parliament, he said Stretton is:
“A unique part of Queensland.
The usual conventions and rules do not always apply in my local area, but that is what I think makes it special.
It is the most multicultural electorate in the state and that energy and drive shines through in our community.
We are fortunate in our local area to have so many community-minded people, and I value the friendships I have made with so many. I am proud we have worked together.”
Duncan and I always supported our multicultural communities and stood against racism. We would never do deals with One Nation.
Unlike the LNP, who at the last election put One Nation second, even in Stretton. I believe this was an utter disgrace and was condemned by the multicultural leaders across Queensland.
For the future, the Palaszczuk Government is currently undertaking an Inquiry into Serious Vilification and Hate Crimes. We understand the Chinese community have been unfairly targeted by racism, especially following COVID.
The Palaszczuk Government wants to hear from you to ensure our laws protect our multicultural communities.

记者：Do you have anything special to say to the readers of the Sydney Post?

James Martin：I wanted to pay tribute to our friend Duncan Pegg, former member for Stretton.
Duncan’s life cut sadly too short was one where he left his mark, a life to be proud of.
Duncan left a great legacy for the people of Stretton, I promise him that I would work hard everyday to continue that legacy.
I want to thank Sydney Post for having this interview with me. I wish the Post more successes in the future.
