Mooncakes bring Australian communities together for a Mid-Autumn festival

Today and this evening, many Australians of Chinese, Vietnamese and Korean heritage are celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival where families and friends gather together to share moon cakes and hang lanterns. It is an ancient festival with a long history focused on expressing appreciation for good harvests and abundance. It is also a festival where togetherness with family is celebrated. This festival is testament to the multiculturalism of Australia and the diverse cultural heritage of our many communities.

Today gives us another opportunity to continue to champion the benefits of a vibrant multicultural Australia. Australia’s diversity is a strength. Modern and multicultural Australia are one and the same. As a result, we have an opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of people from Chinese, Vietnamese and Korean backgrounds. These communities generously and openly share their culture, traditions and heritage with us all.

The full moon is a central part of the Mid-Autumn Festival, symbolising harmony and unity. We thank these various communities for creating partnerships which represent the values that the Labor Party strives to promote. In modern multicultural Australia, we should be able to celebrate every occasion with joy rather than avoid religious or cultural references out of fear.
