Imported COVID Case Causes 355 People to be Quarantined in China

In the early morning of May 9, the Health Commission of Yinchuan（Ningxia Province) announced a new confirmed Covid case, who was a Chinese released from quarantine after entry from Russia. As of 14:00 on May 9, Yinchuan City has investigated 133 close contacts and 316 second-level close contacts. 355 people under centralized quarantine have all undergone the first round of nucleic acid tests and the results were all negative. Other relevant contacts are still being tracked.

The new case, known as Mr Fan, 32 years old, entered Shanghai from Russia on April 23, 2021. After 14 days of centralized quarantine and 3 nucleic acid tests, he was released on May 7 and returned to Yinchuan by plane. However his nucleic acid test result was confirmed to be positive after arrival at Yinchuan. Local expert group judged that he was a confirmed case. Mr Fan has been transferred to a designated hospital for treatment.

According to the epidemiological investigation of this case, all relevant contacts are asked to take nucleic acid testing. A total of 11,244 test samples have been taken, and 7103 samples results have been issued, all of which are negative. The remaining samples are under test.

The close contacts included:

• 6 family members of Mr Fan：His father, mother, cousin, 2 uncles and grandma.

• 13 people who were seated nearby on the flight from Shanghai to Yinchuan, and 6 cabin crew.

• 2 staff from the community health service center who measured the temperature for Mr Fan, the nurse who took care of his grandma, and 2 local staff in the farm of his uncle.

• 2 waiters in the barbecue restaurant who served food for him. (others who were in the restaurant at same time were being investigated.

• 37 people who contacted Mr Fan when he was at the airport and being transferred by ambulance. Including 1 airport cleaning staff, 28 passengers, 1 police officer, 6 epidemic prevention volunteers, and 1 resident who was in airport for pick-up.

• 3 doctors, 2 nurses and 3 patients who had contact with Mr Fan when he visited his grandma in hospital. Other hospital staff and patients who may be in contact are under investigation.

• Other 135 passengers and 2 pilots on the same flight are considered to be 2-level close contacts.

At the same time, the community where Mr Fan lives is assessed as a risky area and implemented closed management and control. All 56 residents in the same unit of the building where Mr Fan lives have been sent for centralized isolation, and residents in other units in the same community  have been asked to take home quarantine.
