Slang Dynasty is a series that unpacks the wide world of Chinese regional slang, internet colloquialisms, and assorted street-level jargon.

Today on Slang Dynasty, we have Yunnan native Niu Yun, bringing us a useful and flexible phrase, which basically translates to “cool” or “dope.”


Yunnan is a province at the border where China meets Thailand. It’s famous for its flavorful, Southeast Asian-style food, and colorful ethnic minority clothing, among other things — two items that are definitely ba zha.
