Is BonBon Girls 303 China's Answer to Blackpink?

BRYAN GROGAN RADII 2021-01-20

BonBon Girls 303 are China’s newest girl band phenomenon. Born out of wildly popular Tencent-produced variety show, Produce Camp 2020 (创造营2020), the girl group consists of the seven highest placing contestants on the show.

They’ve just dropped their first official music video for their debut track, “BONBON GIRLS,” which you can watch below:

Of the seven BonBon members — Xilinnayi “Curley” Gao, Zhao Yue, Wang Yijin, Chen Zhuoxuan, Nene, Liu Xiening, and Zhang Yifan — all are Chinese except for Nene, who is Chinese-Thai and was a member of Thai girl group Milkshake, as well as appearing on a number of TV shows.

The other six members of the group cut their teeth in variety shows around China. Chen Zhuoxuan and Zhang Yifan have also made appearances in popular historical TV series The Untamed, and the Jackson Yee fronted drama Better Days, respectively.

Shot in a slick pastel pink-colored classroom and a glittering, neon-lit room decorated with arcade games, the single incorporates a variety of styles, with the girls alternating between singing and rapping. The official video got 3.8 million views on Chinese video platform Tencent Video and 237,000 views on YouTube within a day of its debut. In comments posted on both platforms, netizens seem most impressed by Curley Gao, Nene, and Liu Xiening.

Drop a comment to tell us what you think: BonBon or Blackpink?
