I think we need to learn about world events, which let us make better decisions. For example, many high-school students nowadays plan to study abroad, and they would closely follow such news as which school gets funding for certain project or changes in universities’ requirement for TOEFL and SAT scores, so that they could select a school most suitable for them. Similarly, those who like traveling tend to pay much attention to news concerning the social and political stability of some countries, seasonal activities in certain places, or even promotion campaigns offered by some big shopping centers in the world. Moreover, knowledge about global events contribute to a global perspective and provides more topics during the conversation.
