Intercultural Learning in Higher Education in China: Global, Local and Glocal Perspective

Preparation for intercultural engagement, whether in China or beyond, is now an important aspect of young people’s education. As students in higher education seek opportunities for study abroad and/or study alongside their international peers in their Chinese institutions, they need intercultural communication resources to support their learning and engagement. Employers also need interculturally competent graduates who can operate in increasingly globalized and intercultural contexts. Furthermore, national policies have highlighted intercultural learning in Chinese higher education, and intercultural learning has been mandated by the Chinese Ministry of Education within its English language teaching guidelines.

The University of Nottingham Ningbo China warmly invites participants for the Intercultural Learning in Higher Education in China: Global, Local and Glocal Perspective on Friday 19th June and Saturday 20th June 2020. Hosted by the School of Education and English in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, this 2-day conference aims to gather researchers, teachers, administrative and management staff in higher education, commercial providers of educational products and services, and policy makers for workshops and presentations on intercultural learning in higher education in China. By advancing dialogue between researchers and practitioners, building bridges between global and local perspectives, and reflecting on theories and practices of intercultural learning in higher education, a deeper understanding of intercultural education in Chinese higher education can be gained. In addition to invited and selected papers and posters (see below), the conference will offer workshops for teachers and trainers based on the intercultural learning materials developed within the RICH-Ed project.

Call for Abstract

We invite researchers and practitioners to submit abstracts for paper and poster presentations at this international conference on intercultural education. Research papers will be 20 minutes long followed by a 5-minute discussion. Poster presentations will enable researchers and practitioners to display (on poster boards) and discuss their research during the conference. Posters may also report pedagogical developments or practitioners’ case studies in the field. Submissions may include, but are not restricted to:

1.international education

2.intercultural/global/glocal talents

3.intercultural learning through internationalization at home

4.assessment of intercultural learning

5.intercultural learning and the community of a shared future for humankind

6.integrating language teaching and intercultural teaching

7.intercultural learning through virtual exchange

8.ethnographic and other experience-based approaches to intercultural learning

9.intercultural learning beyond the curriculum (e.g., in the workplace, in business, when volunteering)

10.intercultural teacher education

Abstract Submission Details

You are invited to submit a 300-350 words abstract in English of your research paper or poster by 29 February 2020. Please include a brief bio of no more than 100 words, and your job title and organization of employment.

* Online payment: RMB 600; Full-time postgraduate student: RMB 400; On-site payment: RMB 800.

Individuals may submit proposals for one presentation role. Presenting roles are defined as:

·First author of an individual research paper or poster

·The roles of Chair and discussant do not count as presenting roles

·Any role in the invited program does not count as a presenting role

Individual Research paper and Poster Presentations: Individually submitted abstracts for paper presentations will be reviewed for scientific merit and decision will be made to accept and reject it based on independent ratings by two reviewers. Highly rated individual papers will be considered by the Scientific Committee for presentation in a 90-100 minutes paper session composed of up to 4 individual paper presentations that are thematically related, each presented for 20 minutes. Individual papers that are highly rated but cannot be accepted for a per session (either because there are not 4 related papers on the topic or the maximum number of paper sessions have been reached) will become individual poster presentations if submitters have indicated that they would like to present the research as a poster if it cannot be presented as an oral paper.

Individual research paper shall include the theoretical framework, empirical data, data analysis, and convincing conclusions. Posters are individual, free-standing research presentations. Posters may also report pedagogical developments or practitioners’ case studies in the field. Submission instructions for individual papers and/ or Poster Presentations

1.A title for your submission with no more than 50 words.

2.Enter a full name and affiliation of each author of your paper.

3.An abstract with a Maximum of 300 words.

4.Use standard reference citations (last name, year) and do not include a reference list.

5.Indicate whether this is a poster or a research paper presentation.

6.If you will be willing to present a paper as a poster if your submission is not accepted as a paper.

Posters are appropriate format when material can be explained briefly, is suited for graphic or visual presentation, and/ or the presenter would benefit for high levels of interaction and discussion. Guidance for a Poster:

Text

Minimize narrative. Use large type in short, separated paragraphs. Numbered or bulleted lists are effective ways to convey a series of points. Do not set entire paragraphs in uppercase or boldface type.

Illustrations

Figures should be designed to be viewed from a distance and should use clear, visible graphics and large type. Each figure or table should have a heading of one or two lines.

Titles and Fonts

Titles and captions should be short and easy to read.

Remember to caption your poster with the abstract title, authors names and affiliations.

To ensure consistency in formatting, all proposals are to be submitted via the online abstract submission form. The maximum length for abstracts is 300 words.

Confirmation of receipt of your submission will be sent to you by our system. You will be notified whether your abstract is accepted by 31 March, 2020.

More details on the practical arrangements (registration, accommodation, …) will be provided in due time.

RICH-Ed (Resources for Interculturality in Chinese Higher Education) is an Erasmus+ CBHE Project (2017-2020) which aims to support Chinese higher education in creating a learning environment that empowers students and staff for global engagement. The project sets out to define a pedagogical approach for intercultural learning, and to develop learning resources for students and support staff that are tested at the five Chinese partner universities and elsewhere in the Yangtze River Delta and North-East China.
