Are you passionate about the role of the private sector in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)? Are you a strong analytical thinker who is comfortable researching, interpreting corporate disclosures, handling data, and writing clear conclusions? The World Benchmarking Alliance (WBA) is now recruiting:
Sustainability Research Analysts
The World Benchmarking Alliance (WBA) is a non-profit organisation that assesses and ranks the world’s most influential companies on their contributions towards the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). At WBA we seek to generate a movement around increasing the private sector’s impact towards a sustainable future that works for everyone. The private sector has a crucial role to play in advancing the SDGs, but to incentivise companies to change, there needs to be a way in which their impact is measured. That’s why we assess the performance of 2,000 of the world’s most influential companies with respect to the SDGs. Our benchmarks are publicly available and used by investors, civil society, governments and companies to inform their contributions towards a positive transformation.
We are now recruiting Research Analysts to join our global organisation. We are looking for purpose-driven candidates with demonstrable research competencies and a passion for sustainable development. Research Analysts are responsible for collecting and analysing company disclosures, evaluating performance against scoring guidelines, and engaging with companies, other stakeholders, and experts in the benchmark process. Candidates should have strong attention to detail and the ability to thrive in an agile work environment that promotes minimum oversight, maximum responsibility and a commitment to the WBAs mission.
What you will do:
Work with research partners and/or directly collect information from publicly available sources (e.g. CSR/sustainability/ESG reports, policy documents) and analyse the findings to score companies’ performance;
Ensure that company information is correctly inputted and analysed;
Engage with stakeholders, including companies, as part of the benchmark process (e.g. company calls to explain methodologies and scoring decisions);
Draft scorecards summarising the performance of benchmarked companies;
Contribute towards improving methodologies and scoring guidelines;
Contribute to the drafting of research publications;
Contribute to WBA-wide research workstreams, including alignment of processes, data harmonisation and digitisation.
What we are looking for:
1 – 5 years of relevant experience in research-related roles is required;
Proven interest in any of the following topics is a plus: nature and biodiversity, climate, and food and agriculture;
Strong academic qualifications and analytical skills are required and experience with Excel, R, macros, databases, and statistics will give the candidate a distinct advantage;
Demonstrable grasp of scientific research methods will be a plus;
Excellent verbal and written English communication skills, and the ability to write clearly and concisely are a must;
Ability to read, write and speak Mandarin and/or other East Asian and Southeast Asian languages will be considered an advantage;
Passion for making a difference with a ‘can do’ mentality and professional attitude;
Ability to work comfortably across different virtual teams and global cultures in an evolving ‘Teal’ working environment that promotes flexibility, self-management and wholeness.
Our offer:
A challenging role with room to grow in a driven team focused on impact, ambition and collaboration. We promote personal growth, believe in flexible working arrangements and offer market-based employment benefits. We believe in equal pay for equal accountability; the all-in annual compensation is the equivalent of €45k. While we have a physical presence in Amsterdam and London, we also have many employees working remotely across the globe. We are a values-led organization committed to inclusivity; therefore, this role can be based anywhere in the world. We particularly welcome applicants from the Global South.

Digital Sector Transformation Lead
Are you passionate about the role of the private sector in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and holding them accountable for their actions and commitments? Are you a strategic thinker with excellent engagement and influencing and leadership skills? Are you interested in the role of technology in sustainability? The World Benchmarking Alliance (WBA) is now recruiting a:
Digital Sector Transformation Lead
WBA is building a movement to measure and incentivise business impact towards a sustainable future that works for everyone. The private sector has a crucial role to play in advancing the SDGs, but to boost companies’ motivation, there needs to be real change in the way that their impact is measured. That’s why we are assessing the progress of thousands of companies through publicly available and free rankings of corporate performance. Our benchmarks are used by investors, civil society, governments and companies to accelerate a race to the top.
The Digital Sector Transformation Lead will drive forward the strategy and vision for the WBA’s Digital Inclusion Benchmark. You will be responsible for overseeing the digital transformation strategy, working with research and communications colleagues to deliver a benchmark that holistically assesses the sustainability performance of the world’s most influential digital companies on their role in creating a digitally inclusive world. As part of the WBA’s engagement function, you will lead engagement efforts to advance digital inclusion, including overseeing the successful Collective Impact Coalition, with a broad range of stakeholders, including investors, industry associations, and civil society organisations. You will also engage with companies themselves to support their adoption of better industry practices, as well as policymakers to shape the ecosystem. You will help grow the movement WBA is building, lead others through our global Alliance, and understand the pressure points for influencing the ecosystem to drive impact, ultimately holding companies accountable for their impact. You will also play a leadership role internally, aligning approaches with institutional priorities, and contributing to organisational strategy development, including fundraising.
What you will do:
Own the overall strategy development and execution of the Digital Inclusion Benchmark, working with research, communications, and engagement colleagues to deliver on key research and stakeholder engagement priorities, ensuring that the Benchmark stays relevant and adds value to the ecosystem, including companies themselves;
Following the launch of the third iteration of the Benchmark (March 2023), continue our digital inclusion engagement strategy based on impact, including building and strengthening relationships with assessed companies, supporting peer-to-peer learning;
Lead on potential funding opportunities and donor commitments in collaboration with the funding team;
Help build a movement to hold companies to account, by driving forward the Digital Inclusion Collective Impact Coalition on AI Ethics, working closely with investors and civil society partners;
Motivate and empower colleagues, engage proactively internally across benchmark and transformation teams, advising on best practices, contributing to WBA-wide impact and learning, and ensuring continuous process improvement.
What we are looking for
12-15 years’ relevant (industry) experience preferably with different stakeholder groups;
A learning mindset, with strong strategic and leadership skills and proven expertise and networks in sustainability;
Ability to multi-task and perform under pressure, often with competing deadlines;
Excellent verbal and written English communication skills, including the ability to distil and translate complex data into relevant insights for a broad range of stakeholders and across various public arenas;
Ability to work across different virtual teams and global cultures, comfortable in an evolving ‘Teal’ working environment that promotes flexibility, self-management and wholeness.
Our offer
A dynamic role with room to grow in a driven team focused on impact, ambition and teamwork. We stimulate personal growth and believe in flexible working arrangements. We have a physical presence in Amsterdam and London, alongside many employees who work across the world. You can be based anywhere for this role as inclusivity is one of our values. You will receive market-based employment benefits (the equivalent of the annual compensation range €110,000 – €125,000 for an employee based in the Netherlands).
