The perseverance gave me the confidence to keep going, and it is the most important skill for this question in my honest opinion.  I remember myself applying to an array of every job opening in my LinkedIn jobs section until it reached a tipping point where opening LinkedIn made me very self-anxious.  On the verge of giving up, just remember that everyone got rejected at some point in their lives. You could always try again.

Note that rejections are steppingstones, you can be in the place where you want to be only after you went through a series of rejections, it is a part of growth, and it provides you the skill of perseverance and confidence. It is what distinguishes you from others who easily give up along the way and make you appreciate the job if you get accepted even more!

Lim Hao Yee

I want to say Networking. It is essential since it will help you build and strengthen your skill set, stay on top of industry trends, meet potential mentors, partners, and clients, and gain access to the resources you'll need to advance your career. If you have good people skills, it means you will also make a good team player. Having a collaborative approach to working will assist the team to achieve a shared goal most effectively.

Self-confidence in the workplace is also significant for your success. You'll be more driven, less stressed, and more likely to drive performance, career progress, and work relationships if you have greater confidence.

Lee Tze Chian

I think that having leadership skills is necessary since it can help you make critical decisions and have the flexibility to solve problems in an ever-changing environment. Recruiters also favor candidates that can learn quickly because they can adjust quickly and require less time, effort, and money to train. Thus, you may improve your employment opportunities by learning how to be a fast learner. Furthermore, responsibility can be one of the things that distinguish you from other candidates.  Future employers are interested in your ability to write and communicate professionally. In your cover letter, you can demonstrate your writing skills, as well as your verbal skills by providing relevant answers to interview questions.

Joey Chow

Having good communication skills is a must. Being able to communicate well with the interviewers through online interviews and using proper language, knowing what to answer even if it is a sudden interview is also very important. Hard skills such as the ability to speak multiple languages and operate software like Microsoft Office are also highly valued by employers.

Moreover, you need to be willing to learn new things. Some companies might require to try on new things. Be adventurous and explain that you’re willing to learn even though you are not good with it or you have not learned about it. Besides that, it is also important to be proactive and constantly seek job opportunities.

What are the things that you would

recommend others to pay attention to when

we want to apply for an internship during

the pandemic?

Pay attention to your CV or resume, keep it straight to the point, and just be professional with it. A tip to note is to have your experience bullet points written starting with action verbs (i.e., generated, analyzed, presented, proposed, etc.). Also, perhaps try to list your achievements from high school or universities that are only relevant to the job. Try to appear in interviews wearing your best confidence, don’t be nervous and don’t forget to smile!

Lim Hao Yee

If you have decided to enroll yourself in a specific industry for the long term, get as much information as you can before applying to the specific company to ensure the company best suits your skills and interest. If you are just looking for an internship where you can gain more working experience, try applying to as many companies as you can, and not be scared of trying or failure.

Try to come out with an appealing resumeto attract the company's recruiters, that will be your first step. After that, just try to apply to the companies that you are interested in through their official websites or LinkedIn.

Lee Tze Chian

If you do not have a specific role or industry you are interested in, I recommend tryingto intern in some companies to find a suitable job after trying. Besides, we also have to consider whether to choose to work in a real work environment or a WFH (work-from-home) model

Due to the pandemic, we cannot deny that WFH is a good option for us (we can focus on both our internship and university life, and our safety is also guaranteed), but this work model will decrease our face-to-face communication with others. Therefore, I think that it would be better to work in a real work environment. In addition, the real company's environment will let us learn more than WFH.

Joey Chow

I would recommend making sure that you suit the job requirements, constantly try new things and get out of your comfort zone. Check if the company/employer is legitimate, as well as read through the contract or any other details of the job, especially during the pandemic, and make sure that your rights are valid.

What advice do you have for those looking to

Network through LinkedIn and have a lot of connections with people. Especially those who have work experience and also seniors. If they have worked or are still working for a company, they could refer you and put a good word for you internally in the company. Point is, don’t be shy to reach out to people, it’s the only way to make connections. Once I replied to a senior’s Instagram Story and he offered to help refer me to the company if I was looking to apply there. The more you connect with those who are motivated and those within the right circle, you will get benefit from learning from it. So, choose your circles wisely as well as they can have some degree of influence on who you could become.

Lim Hao Yee

With social distancing in place, a lot of companies offer remote/hybrid working methods, and you could find those jobs via online websites also. Before really getting into the job, you could ask about this specific question during the interview, and of course, they will still prefer working in the office.

Lee Tze Chian

I think we can pay attention to the internship information shared by professors in our WeChat group. It means that the internship is approved by the university, and also is safe and good for students to apply. Besides, I also recommend to find internships on a formal recruitment website. The website reviews the real profiles and contents of the companies to ensure the applicants will not be cheated, it is a safe place for us to find an internship through the network. Nowadays there are a lot of real and fake jobs on the network, so we have to learn to distinguish them clearly.

Joey Chow

Do some research on companies that you plan to work for, see if you can meet their requirements before applying (this will save your time). This would not need social distancing measures as you can do it at home. Be prepared that interviews might be done online due to the current pandemic, also be prepared if they changed it to a physical interview. If you are worried about their social distancing measures, feel free to ask them about it.

Currently, I am not working since I just relocated to London for this semester. Previously, I worked as an E-commerce intern at OPPO China. I landed this job from seeing a chat broadcast in one of the group chat hubs that I am in, then inquire to the HR’s email, then they asked for my CV and other information. But at first they did not directly reach out to me. A month after my first email, they asked once again for me to resend my CV and then still no decision until the third time they actually reached out back to me they asked for an interview. It was a very sudden interview that I actually got no time to prepare for. It was during the highs of the pandemic so my internship was fully WFH.

I’m not having a job right now. My previous job was mainly about completing collaboration between influencers and my company. My roles are to contact the influencers, negotiate collaboration fees, tracking the whole process of the collaboration, and also some document translation works. I found the job through an online advertisement and was lucky to be chosen for the job.

This company has collaborated with a lot of international brands and companies, and my work tasks include helping our customers to find their ideal KOL and letting them have an opportunity to have business collaboration. I landed the job with my resume experiences, soft skills, and language skills.

My current job is as a Finance Intern for a Shanghai Company. As an intern for the financial department, I’m responsible for shadowing upper-level management in the financial department to gain industry knowledge. My main tasks are data maintenance and assisting with financial audits. To land this job, it can be found through the person in charge of the company to get an opportunity for interviews.

It took months. I almost gave up applying to another position or company until I got another reply from them because sometimes companies do not respond to your application. However, don't give up and persevere!

Lim Hao Yee

It is uncertain how long we could get a formal job or internship because we need to find a suitable job for us, and also the company needs to find people that suit their needs the most. All we can do is keep on sending our resumes and don’t be scared of rejection.

Lee Tze Chian

If we have spent a lot of time looking for a job but have been unsuccessful, I think we should first think about our interview process. If there is any part or question we did not answer well, we need to try to improve it. We can also think about whether the job is suitable for us (abilities, etc). If we are sure that this is the job that we want to apply for, then just stick with it; if we find out that we just want to have an income, then we can reconsider. There is also a suggestion for our juniors, such as participating in student council activities or being on the organizing committee of an event thatcan help us improve our abilities and find out what we are good at and interested in.

Joey Chow

Commonly, job searches could take up a long time as some applications could be complicated. Some companies get back to applicants within a week, some might take up to a month, and some put you into consideration but only plan to hire you during their next hiring process in probably the next year. For big companies, they have more applicants, and going through the resumes and letters is a lot to be done for the HR, hence it will take some time for them to get back to you. By the time they get back to you, there will be 2-3 interviews that have to be done before they decide on whether they want to hire you for the position.
