We would love to start this theme by answering one of the questions that our team at the Learning Frontier has often come across from the parents.

Q:Why would a child need a psychoeducational assessment?

A:

Psychoeducational assessments are conducted to gain more knowledge about a student’s strengths and weaknesses so that teachers and parents can provide appropriate support.

Most commonly, a student is referred for an assessment because of some difficulty they are facing in school or at home. It is normal for children to have trouble in school from time to time or for children to have periods of difficulty with behavior or social skills.

But if your child is showing consistent and significant difficulty in certain areas despite having accommodations or additional support from school, it would likely be beneficial to seek out a psychoeducational evaluation.

Some signs to look out for include: difficulty learning basic grade-level academic, social, or behavioral skills, disruptive behavior in class, and/or a worsening attitude towards school.

Students that show behavioral difficulties at school but not at home may be experiencing learning difficulties rather than a behavioral issue.  They may be acting out because of confusion, frustration, or an attempt to distract others from their difficulties.

A psychoeducational assessment can also be conducted for students that are being considered for skipping a grade or an accelerated learning program.

Students that are considered gifted learners may benefit from an assessment in order to show what level their thinking abilities and academic skills are compared to other students their age. This can help determine whether changes in their grade or instruction is appropriate or not.

Parents that wish to learn more about the way their child learns may also wish to consider having a psychoeducational assessment completed. By evaluating a student’s strengths & weaknesses, individualized recommendations can be given to the parent and school about the best way to teach the student (e.g. Do they learn better with information presented verbally or visually?).

By focusing on the student’s strengths and teaching them ways to compensate for weaknesses, the student can become more confident and independent in learning.
