In July 2018, under the name of "the most beautiful bookstore in Chengdu", the results of the "Xinglong Lake Bookstore Architectural Creative Design Competition", sponsored by Chengdu Tianfu New Area Investment Group Co., Ltd. and China Southwest Architectural Designand Research Institute Co., Ltd., and co- sponsored by Chengdu Yi Zhu Yi Shi Culture Communication Co., Ltd., were announced: with 486 applicants and 249 conceptual plans received, MUDA-Architects stood out from the 20 finalists and won the first prize in the design competition.

Chengdu Tianfu New Area is a crucial region in the development of the "The Belt and Road" and the development of the Yangtze Rivere conomic belt. In February 2018, the concept of Park City was put forward at the first time. Against such background, the theme of the competition is to create a new city landmark. MUDA-Architects takes this opportunity to reflect Chengdu's unique urban temperament and lifestyle through the bookstore design, and also paid the highest respect to the natural environment of Xinglong Lake by drawing an ecological blueprint with an emphasis on "landscape integration and urbansymbiosis".
Design concept
MUDA-Architects takes the idea of "a book falling from the sky" as the starting point of the story, and forms the structure in the shape of a book. Through this metaphor, MUDA-Architects hopes that people can truly walk into this building, to read and embark on a journey of self-discovery in a peaceful environment.

Bird view
The project is located at the east side of Xinglong Lake Bay Area, with a rectangle of 12m X 39m as the plane foundation, the lowest point of the roof is 3 meters in height, while another corner of the building is elevated to 16meters, and the final corner measuring 7.5 meters; thus forming a roof with spiritualsymbolization. When the wind lightly strikes the water, the lake surface echoes on the curvy roof.
The building is linearly expanded according to the site conditions, providing a connection to the open lake. The choice of a hydrophilic platform that extends out of the water and a glass window that opens on the elevation by lake all show respect to nature. Space and the natural environment together produce a positive interaction, the building responds to the natural environment in an almost "translucent" way: grassland, trees, water, grass, and the gentle, reflecting lake surface.
Reception and exhibition area
Entering the bookstore from the main entrance, the dimensions of the space are not yet fully displayed —— only the foreground, several steps and two exhibition walls. Before people can spectacle the entire core area of the building, they can peek the nature-gifted lake-view through the window on the left. The exhibition entrance area is not designed for books, rather it aims to let people calm down before they continue to the reading area.
Reading and bookshelf area
Passing the exhibition area and walking few steps downstairs, the sunken reading area is hidden behind the wall. Readers can enter the most comfortable reading state by either standing, or leaning, or siting on the steps at will.
Cafe
When the weather is fine, the glass curtain wall on the side of the lake can be expanded. With the window shields open, a row of tables and chairs together form a coffee reading area. This is the nearest area to the lake, with whispering breeze and flying warblers, readers can enjoy reading with nature.
Meditation area
The meditation area fully takes into account the need of self-dialogue. This is a long corridor-like space, the exterior wall opens upwith different sizes and shapes of holes which allows natural light topenetrate. The changing time can be sensed with the changing angle of light. Meanwhile the interior wall has a horizontal slender opening, with its level equals to people’s eyes, allowing people to see the lake directly through the window, as if they are outside the building, and within the natural landscape.
The conference room and logistics area are located at the end of the building and can be accessed from the periphery of the building. This design ensures the privacy and convenience of the space, and the reading area will not be disturbed either.
Floor plan
Space diagram
With neither winding corridors, nor mysterious concealment, the whole space gives readers unlimited possibilities, and great physical and mental freedom. MUDA-Architects uses architectural language to propose therelationship between man and books, man and nature, and man and space. Withinthis building, mountains, lake and things are equivalent to people, we regain interest to each other while forgetting ourselves; within this building, visitors are awakened to face their true self, and to repair the degraded senses.
