It’s going to be a very cultural festive season this coming December, January and February! Read on to find out all the fun and festive events coming up from Cultural Keys!
December 1st - Cultural Keys will be at the annual Christmas Cracker, BSB Sanlitun 10.30am-2.30pm
Come by with your kids so they can paint Rabbit Gods and Beijing opera masks to use as decorations or give as gifts. We’ll also be selling some small gift items that make perfect stocking fillers with a Chinese twist!

December 3rd - Win a prize from us at the British Embassy Christmas Bazaar 3-7pm
Although CK won’t have a stall this year we have donated a fantastic prize which you can win by taking part in the Embassy’s raffle. It’s a voucher for a 3-hour martial arts workshop, so don’t forget to buy your tickets on the day!
December 7th - The Scholar Experience at Guozijian and Wudaoying 2-5pm
Join us for the Scholar Experience, a chance to learn more about the infamous imperial examinations and Chinese calligraphy through a walk and calligraphy workshop in the hutongs!

December 14th - Gourd painting workshop (making Christmas decorations with a Chinese twist!) at the Cultural Keys Chinese Culture Centre 2-5pm
Nobody wants to buy plastic Christmas decorations and contribute to the world’s environmental crisis, right? Small painted gourds make a fantastic natural alternative to plastic baubles, and they carry over to Spring Festival too! Perfect for kids and adults alike, you’ll learn the many reasons gourds are so auspicious in Chinese culture before getting stuck into painting your gourds!
Parents are welcome to drop their children off (12+) and explore the village or relax in a cafe while the kids paint!

December 15th - Shaolin Warrior’s Workshop near Liangmaqiao 2-5pm
Have you always been intrigued by Shaolin martial arts but never made it to the Shaolin Temple itself to learn more? Then join us for this three hour workshop where we’ll introduce you to the warm-ups, exercises, and beginning of a form that make up the foundations of Shaolin kung fu. No experience is necessary! Perfect to enjoy by yourself, with your family, colleagues, staff or members before Christmas really kicks in!

January 4th - Calligraphy Workshop at the Cultural Keys Chinese Culture Centre 11am-3.30pm
Join us for our regular monthly calligraphy workshop where we’ll learn the history and basics of Chinese calligraphy as well as writing characters on red paper to get ready for Spring Festival (Chinese New Year)! Lunch and all materials are included.

January 9th and 11th - Tianjin Spring Festival Decorations Market Photowalk 9am-5pm
On this informal photowalk we’ll take an express train to Tianjin for the day to walk down Ancient Culture Street to the decorations market, where you can buy all kinds of paper decorations such as papercuts to decorate your home to welcome in the Year of the Rat! Train tickets and lunch are included. Choose from either a weekday (9th) or weekend (11th) walk.

January 14th - British Club Beijing’s Morning Cuppa 10am-12pm
As this is the Spring Festival edition of the British Club’s regular morning cuppa event, Cultural Keys will be there to tell you all about the origins of Chinese New Year, what to expect and how to celebrate. And there will also be vendors selling Chinese New Year gifts and decorations!

January 19th - CK will be at British School Beijing Sanlitun’s Temple Fair, BSB Sanlitun Time TBC
Come by with your kids so they can make decorations and gifts for the Chinese New Year! We’ll also be selling handmade papercuts and New Year couplets to hang around your door for luck this coming Year of the Rat!

January 24th - Spring Festival Eve Celebration (morning session) 9am-3pm
Join us to celebrate Chinese New Year’s Eve together at the Cultural Keys Chinese Culture Centre! We’ll be making dumplings and writing lucky New Year couplets with our expert calligrapher which you can take home and hang around your front door! Transportation and lunch is included. This shorter morning session is better suited to families with younger children.

January 24th - Spring Festival Eve Celebration (evening session) 3-10pm
Join us to celebrate Chinese New Year’s Eve together at the Cultural Keys Chinese Culture Centre! We’ll be learning about the origins of Spring Festival, making dumplings and writing lucky New Year couplets with our expert calligrapher which you can take home and hang around your front door! Transportation and dinner is included. This evening session is better suited to couples and families with older children.

January 28th-31st - Kid’s 4-day Culture Camp at Beixinqiao 2-5pm
Our culture camp for kids aged 10-16 runs through Spring Festival Golden Week from Tuesday to Friday. Every afternoon kids will get to do different activities which introduce them to the history and culture of China, including calligraphy, ink painting, knotting and rice clay model-making, as well as going on a historical tour of the area and putting on a dramatic presentation of the Spring Festival origin myth. Drinks, snacks and all materials included in the price.

February 1st Calligraphy Workshop 11am-3.30pm
Join us for our regular monthly calligraphy workshop at the Cultural Keys Chinese Culture Centre where we’ll learn about the history, techniques and tools used in Chinese calligraphy and practice the technique through writing characters. You’ll finish by writing out an auspicious phrase to take home. Lunch and all materials are included.

February 8th Lantern Festival Celebration 3-9pm
The festive season concludes with our lantern festival eve celebration marking the end of the 15-day Spring Festival period. You’ll learn about the history and customs of the festival, how to make traditional tangyuan, a sweet dessert that is usually eaten on the Lantern Festival, and we’ll paint lanterns and solve riddles together. This activity is perfect for families to enjoy together! Dinner, all materials and transportation are included.
