As part of our trip to Guizhou we were invited by the International Mountain Tourism Alliance to attend the 2022 Asian Mountain Tourism Promotion Conference, which aims to reshape and develop the mountain tourism market after COVID-19.
The conference provided an opportunity to see the challenges posed to tourism in mountainous areas and to explore potential solutions. As a company reliant on tourism, some of these issues also affect us.
The conference was also a chance to meet people from Guizhou, inspect poverty alleviation projects, and see what the status of tourism resources is in the region around the capital, Guiyang.

Speakers at the conference included the Thai Ambassador to China.
Of particular interest was the speech by Sandra Carvao, representative of the World Tourism Organisation, which included many important practical recommendations on how to develop tourism in mountainous regions with particular focus on environmental protection and involving local people every step of the way.
Danzhai Wanda, a poverty alleviation project, includes hotels and a shopping street built in local style, featuring performers of local dances. Staff are Miao and other ethnic groups from the local area.

Danzhai County Guochun Intangible Cultural Heritage Silversmithing Village was the second poverty alleviation project we visited. It was started by a Miao man to help his community.
The project includes a display space built in the local style where visitors can see various different traditional crafts such as batik and silversmithing taking place, and a modern school to train young locals. More than 310 local people have found jobs or started their own businesses through the project.
