Discover the delicious reasons why China goes crazy for these crabs two months every year!
Tis the season for Hairy Crabs! On our annual Hairy Crab Feast, we'll explore three different restaurants in the city's Old Town neighborhood to try a variety of dishes that highlight hairy crab meat, roe, and shells.
Thanks to their autumnal spawning season, these crabs are at their peak flavor during the ninth and tenth lunar months of the year - which means early October through early December this year.
This seasonal specialty three-hour food tour has limited availability based on peak hairy crab season, and we’re only running FIVE public tours in 2021, so act fast to get your spots!
Oct 4 @ 6pm

What to Expect On The Hairy Crab Feast Tour
We’ll head just south of the former walled city to sample pure xiefen (crab roe) xiaolongbao from a local soup dumpling institution first, before heading into the lilongs of Old Town.
Next up, we'll head to a benbang (local Shanghainese) specialty restaurant that serves up some of the best crab roe spinach noodles in the city during the fall.
Once we've had our "appetizers", we'll head to our third stop of the evening: a Shaoxing restaurant. We'll pair multiple hairy crab dishes with the city's most famous export: huangjiu. China's answer to brandy, this huangjiu comes served in a tasting platter that will offer your samples that have been aged for 5-30 years. You'll learn about the fermentation, aging process, and why Traditional Chinese Medicine doctors and sommeliers both agree is the perfect pairing with hairy crab.
We'll finish off the feast with a few local Shaoxing specialties and a tutorial on how to crack into these seasonal crustaceans. You'll be opening them like a local Shanghainese at your next office dinner, and learning how to maximize the amount of meat and roe you can get out of the crabs!
Along the way, your bilingual foodie guide will teach you all about crab, from how to tell the difference between the sexes (and which one is in season) to what bits NOT to eat of the crab to what catadromous means.
You’ll also see how locals live (and eat) in some of the city’s oldest neighborhoods inside Shanghai’s former walled city – before the wrecking ball turns this area into high-rise apartment buildings. We'll eat at three different local restaurants in this neighborhood.
