关于展览


恒艺空间很荣幸地宣布,将于9月3日推出艺术家陈量在杭州的首次个展《仓颉庙会》。该展览将文字的书写史作为一个整体叙述,借用庙会的形式和场景,展厅中将具有教化作用的书法、乡村庙会中的民间“造字”神话以及作为攫取权力手段的文字书写传统,融汇于一炉,依此奠定对于民众书写文字的“拜物教”之考察、诠释和研究的基础。


作为一种记忆术的“技术”成果,文字书写一方面成为科学理性的有力工具,同时被知识与权力支配和使用;另一方面,系统化的文字产生以后,文字僭越了仓颉之神,自身具有了书写的“魔力”,并且演绎出自己的历史,诸如“中国书法史”。但这种文化性的精英书写使得“文字之灵”变得干瘪,甚至产生模式化的“文化债”,最终写字变成了一种还债模式。尤其对于汉字而言,离开乡土原野的书写,难以恢复其远古时代的淳朴灵性。此次展览中的作品,陈量基于对汉字与原始“胚胎文字”之间继承关系的认知和把握,试图将具有象征意义的地方社会中的扶乩、写帐和谶纬等书写仪式的记忆唤起,努力描绘书写人类学的复杂问题,并着力在文字书写的神话性与文化性之间找到一个更为普遍性的通道。

书写者突然从文化的特殊性中逃逸了出来,这是陈量最为关心的问题,他将此现象称为“造字力比多”。此次展览中呈现的陈量近作,试图追溯这样一种书写状况---文图浑沌不分的艺术与文字同源的时刻。通过庙会,命运、汉字书写、符号与象征并流,希冀与观众一起思考一种未来期望的涂写物。






About the exhibition


Hengyi Space is please to announce that on 3rd Sep,Cangjie Temple Fair, the first solo exhibition of artist Chen Liang in Hangzhou, will be launched. The exhibition narrates the history of writing as a whole, borrowing the form and scene of temple fairs. The exhibition integrates calligraphy with educational functions, folk myths of "writing characters" in village temple fairs, and the tradition of writing as a means of gaining power. From such  method, the artist lays the foundation for the investigation, interpretation and research of the "fetishism" of the people's writing.


As a "technical" achievement of mnemonics, on the one hand, writing has became a powerful tool of scientific rationality, and at the same time it is dominated and used by knowledge and power. On the other hand, after the emergence of systematic characters, characters overstepped the god of Cangjie, possessed the "magic power" of writing, and deduced their own history, such as the "History of Chinese Calligraphy". But this kind of cultural elite writing makes the "spirit of words" dry up, and even creates a pattern of "cultural debt", and writing eventually becomes a debt repayment model. Especially for Chinese characters, it is difficult to restore the simplicity and spirituality of ancient times when writing outside the countryside. The works in this exhibition, based on Chen Liang’s cognition and grasp of the inheritance relationship between Chinese characters and the original “embryo script”, trying to evoke the memory of writing rituals, such as spirit writing, “Xiezhang”and   divination studies in the symbolic local society, and describe the complex problems of writing anthropology. The artist is also dedicated to find a more universal channel between the mythological and cultural nature of writing.


The writer suddenly escaped from the particularity of the culture, which is Chen Liang's greatest concern, and he called this phenomenon "libido of character creation". Chen Liang's recent works presented in this exhibition attempt to trace such a writing condition—the moment when art and text are indistinguishable. Through the temple fair, fate, Chinese writing, signs and symbols coexist, hoping to think about a kind of scribble of future expectations with the audience.






关于艺术家


陈量现生活、工作于杭州和北京。幼时跟随村里画庙师傅学习书法和神像绘制,成年后在陕西科技大学学习无机非金属材料工程专业,后于中央美术学院实验艺术学院就读,并获得硕士学位。自2012年成为职业艺术家以来,他的创作和研究基于对地方知识的田野考察、古代仪式、文字起源和人类书写的传统,并始终朝着挖掘被隐藏的历史和书写普遍性的状态前进。由于受到民间仪式、神秘主义和长青哲学的启发,常使他思考如何将零碎、混杂的民间思想以书写的方式重建。这使其工作包括以图像学和文献收集、出版、田野、纪录片、写作、诗歌、剧场、书法和绘画等各种方式展开,构建了其复杂的诗意视野。他还对理论研究、民间亚文化、艺术乡建、以及地方传说和信仰充满热情,并于2020年创立仪式民众剧团(CPT)。他的工作执着于挖掘、重新发现和解释呈现那些曾经迷失、未闻和被掩埋的痕迹和声音。






About Artist

Chen Liang currently lives and works in Hangzhou and Beijing. As a young child, he studied calligraphy and idol painting with the temple masters, and as an adult he studied inorganic non-metallic materials engineering at Shanxi University of Science and Technology, and later studied at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in the School of Experimental Art, where he received his MA. Since becoming a professional artist in 2012, his work and research have been based on fieldwork on local knowledge, ancient rituals, the origins of writing and the tradition of human writing, and has always moved towards a state of uncovering hidden histories and writing universals. Inspired by folk rituals, mysticism and evergreen philosophy, he often thinks about how to reconstruct the fragmented and mixed-up folk ideas in the form of writing. This has led him to work in various ways including iconographic and documentary collecting, publishing, fieldwork, documentary, writing, poetry, theatre, calligraphy and painting, building his complex poetic vision. He is also passionate about theoretical research, folk subcultures, artistic vernacular construction, and local legends and beliefs, and founded the Ceremonial Popular Theatre (CPT) in 2020. His work is obsessed with uncovering, rediscovering and interpreting traces and voices that were once lost, unheard and buried.
