The story of Chengdu’s rise to
prominence as a prosperous city of strategic importance in China is reflected in
the high levels of investment and tourism it has attracted in recent years. Unlike
many of the traditional Waldorf Astoria hotels, Chengdu Waldorf Astoria is part
of a mixed-use development. At 52 stories and as one of
five super high-rise towers on the site, Chengdu Waldorf Astoria creates a
sense of place with a shu embroidery-inspired façade, and delivers a memorable
arrival experience for guests and an elevated stay befitting the city’s
burgeoning reputation. A branded glass box at the top of the hotel tower
provides an ideal spot for scenic views and photos.
The
square-shaped land features the hotel, apartments, office buildings
and high-end residences, as well as a large-sized shopping center with
the above ground area of 50,000㎡ and underground area of 30,000㎡. As is
planned, the main display area of the shopping center will be arranged
along the two streets to accommodate pedestrian traffic. The west side
will be lined with first-tier brand flagship stores along Tianfu Avenue,
and the Jinhui West No.1 Street in the north will be the main entrance of
the Yintai Department Store. The 220-meter-high hotel and serviced
apartments, as the highest point in the project - and even in the
financial district of the city - are located in the south west corner of
the parcel, creating the urban display surface towards the city’s trunk
road, and becoming a portal image of the entire area.
In the master plan, to maximize the visual field of the landscape, the towers are designed with differentiated patterns to reduce the face-to-face view among the towers. The main tower building is designed as a regular triangle, to expand the visual field of the landscape by means of cornering and filleting, and also guarantee that no side will be shaded by any other tower. The regular triangle accords with the positioning of Waldorf Astoria as “Classic Luxury”, that is, the sense of order with the pattern of central axial symmetry.
The relation between the cultural origin of Chengdu and the site is realized by extracting and reinterpreting the cultural elements. Chengdu’s low-key lifestyle is expressed in the architectural language. The reflection of local Sichuan embroidery on the glass curtain wall highlights the entire building complex. The overall architectural design focuses on both the efficiency of space and styling, and the building’s architectural details as a whole.
The
skin of the hotel is created with deep-color stone, metal color and
grey glass. The horizontal perforated metal plate over hangs the glass
curtain wall and weaves vivid patterns like visual art, creating
continuous and discontinuous fabric textures, as well as the texture
changes with spiral fluctuations. As the visual perspectives evolve, the
patterns also change, breaking the dullness of conventional tower. This
unified expression of details creates rich and colorful architectural
styles. The high-end apartments in the lower zone underthe hotel of the
main tower incorporate the spatial scale and decorative materials in the
same specification as that of Waldorf. Different from traditional single
Waldorf Astoria Hotels, Chengdu Waldorf Astoria is located and patterned
as one part of the commercial complex. Extending the elegant corewith
classical decorations, luxury and a sense of order, the designer
has reinterpreted the traditional hotel with historical contents by
combining modern touches with local characteristics, transforming it into
an exquisite modern building.
The“glass box” hung with Waldorf Astoria signage in the top floor of the hotel have created unique arrival experience for the guests. As part of the urban complex, Chengdu Waldorf Astoria Hotel’s arrival differs from that of single hotel. The low-storey functions can be returned to the commercial use whenever needed, and only the transitional lobby with a full height of two floors is set in the first floor of the hotel, and the arriving guests directly take the shuttle elevators to the sky lobby in the 50th floor. The lounge in the sky lobby extends outward to form the “glass box,” with sweeping views of the city of Chengdu, providing guests with an ideal landscape viewing and photographing platform. The huge “WA” outside creates a strong brand presence, making the hotel the urban place to be seen in Chengdu.
Throughout the hotel brand’s hundred-year history, there has always been a Peacock Alleybar Different from other Peacock Alleys, the Peacock Alley in Chengdu Waldorf Astoria Hotel is situated in the higher zone of the main tower building of Chengdu Yintai Center. Peacock Alley is horizontally linked from the depth direction to the hall, all-day restaurant, bar and other public space. Large-sized wall decorations make Peacock Alley look like a proud peacock fluttering and soaring high, bringing a luxurious feel to the space.
The banquet hall of the hotel
is situated on the roof of the shopping center and has certain
correlations with the commerce of the shopping center. Featuring
aspecial car elevator
for the exhibition of luxury cars, an L-shaped antechamber is deployed
just towards Tianfu Avenue, creating a shopwindow effect forinterior
activities.
The design of the Art Deco-style canopy and porch at the main entrance of the hotel - Sherlock’s feather - refers to the entrance of New York Waldorf. The fine and dense perforated metal holes introduce natural light as the sun changes depending on the day and the weather, as well as reflect colorful starlight in the nighttime. The foyers on both sides feature the same pattern, and in combination with the customized copper gate, create a rich the sense of arrival.
