Black and white photography

在我眼里，摄影就等于黑白。提到黑白精神，我觉得有三个特点:抽象性、象征性、梦之性格。

In my eyes, photography is black and white. When it comes to the spirit of black and white, I think it has three characteristics: abstraction, symbolism and dream character.

将这三个特点融为一体，成为比人的眼睛所看见的更为强烈的印象。

Combine these three characteristics into a stronger impression than the human eye can see.

通常人们所目睹的，是形形色色的彩色空间，

What people usually see is colorful space,

但是，若能通过黑白照片，则可以看见另一个现实。

But if you can see through black and white photos, you can see another reality.

世界上没有任何事情没有其决定性的一瞬间。

There is nothing in the world without its decisive moment.

在几分之一秒的时间里，

In a fraction of a second,

在认识事件意义的同时，

While recognizing the significance of the event,

又给予事件本身以适当的完美的结构形式。

It also gives the event itself an appropriate and perfect structural form.

摄影表现的性质可以用一个球体来作比喻。这个球体的一极是“主观”，另一极是“客观”，The nature of photography can be compared to a sphere. One pole of this sphere is "subjective", and the other is "objective",

而摄影家则是一个旅行者，
The photographer is a traveler,
穿行于主观与客观这两极间的艰难旅行中，
Through the difficult journey between the subjective and objective poles,

只要需要，摄影家就可以在任何地点停下脚步，去开拓未知的领域。As long as needed, the photographer can stop at any place to explore the unknown.

It's what your eyes see, but the picture flashes by,

You can hardly see anything! To capture it, you have to have a bad camera first.

拍摄照片就是要屏住呼吸，全部的官能都集中在一个点上，捕捉稍纵即逝的现实。

To take a picture is to hold your breath. All the senses are focused on one point to capture the fleeting reality.

就在那个瞬间，抓住一幅影像就成了巨大的身体和心灵的快乐。

At that moment, grasping an image becomes a great joy of body and mind.
