Occurring around December 22 each year, the winter solstice is a day which has the shortest daytime and the longest nighttime in the Northern Hemisphere. After that day,the daytime will become longer and longer while the climate enters the coldest stage of the year. In ancient China,the winter solstice, regarded as a major festival was so important that there was a saying went that " The winter solstice was as important as the SpringFestival.Here are also some traditional customs to celebrate the winter solstice. For example, people of Northern China eat dumplings on the winter solstice while people of Southern China eat noodles on that day.
冬至(the winter solstice)为每年公历12月22日左右。冬至是北半球(the NorthernHemisphere)全年中白天最短、黑夜最长的一天。过了冬至，白天就会 天天变长，各地气候都进入一年中最寒冷的阶段。我国古代对冬至很重视，冬至被当作一个较大的节日，曾有“冬至大如年”的说法，而且有庆贺冬至的习俗。北方地区有冬至吃饺子的风俗，南方地区在这一天则有吃面条的习惯。
