Are you a parent?

Your kids are between 3 to 18?

Have you discovered his/her interests?

Do you have trouble finding a good place for him/her to play, have fun, and spend time after school?

Then read on, this might be something you are seeking…

This September, coinciding with the launch of Wellington College International Hangzhou, Hangzhou will have our own Wellington Academy Programme. Hangzhou has the right attributes, being a vibrant city with a growing number of parents seeking extra-curricular opportunities for their children. If you are a parent searching for high-quality after-school activities where your children can improve their physical fitness and creativity, or are just looking for an opportunity to develop your child’s interests after school, then check out the Wellington Academy Programme Hangzhou.

The Wellington Academy Programme is open for all members of the public, not just Wellington pupils. They will be offering a range of different programmes in the evenings and on the weekends for children between the ages of 6 to 18 years old. The list includes sports, the performing arts, academics, languages and more. The programme will launch in Hangzhou hosting an English Language Academy, French, swimming, synchronized swimming, science, Lego, boxing, football, and floorball. More Academies will be added in the future.

We attended the recent official launch ceremony on June 15th. If you ask us what the difference is between the Wellington Academy Programme and other training institutions or schools, we would highlight several key points.

 Holistic Education

This is a key word at the Wellington Academy Programme, as with all Wellington College schools. The term “holistic education” was explored in more detail at the launch ceremony. At its essence, holistic education means that they focus on the well-rounded development of their children, ensuring that they develop both academically and personally.

▲ Mr Carlton Palmer (Director of Wellington Academy)

▲ Mr Paul Rogers (Founding Executive Master at Wellington College Hangzhou)

▲ Mr Simon Ruscoe-Price (Director of Academics (English) at Wellington College China)

▲ Dr Ahmed Hussain (Senior Director of Academics at Wellington College China)

Every child is different, and with the right teaching methods, students can discover what makes them unique, what excites them, and then develop those areas. The teachers and coaches encourage the children to develop all aspects of themselves through the arts, sport, science, language, and so on.

The Wellington Academy Programme is an additional way that children can achieve well-rounded growth outside the classroom; exploring their individual interests and talents, and pushing themselves beyond a basic ability to become more specialised and trained. The ultimate goal is that children will be inspired by the world around them, able to tackle problems independently, make intellectual choices, chase their individual passions, and foster a environment of inclusivity where children from all walks of life can enjoy extra-curricular activities together.

 Teachers and Coaches

The coaches and teachers at the Wellington Academy Programme are top notch. The team is led by former Premier League and England football player, Carlton Palmer, and is supported by former professional artists from the stage and screen in London, New York and beyond, as well as international class sports coaches in tennis and swimming. Their tennis coach was on the ATP tennis tour. Their swimming coaches swam in the finals of the Olympics. One core philosophy shared by the entire team is the strong belief that children who undertake physical exercise and develop their creativity will learn better academically as well. They are complimentary skills.

 The Campus & Facility

The Wellington College Hangzhou campus is a spacious 74,00 square meters. The external design was influenced by the aesthetics of the Wellington College in England, which is 159 years old.

The interior facilities, including the classrooms and common spaces, were designed to inspire the children and foster their creativity. When it comes to athletics, the sports facilities are nothing short of amazing. There is a 400-meter all-weather synthetic running track, basketball and badminton courts, and two swimming pools; one training pool for those learning to swim and a 25-meter, six-lane competition pool with a professional Colorado timing system.

The range of facilities on offer in the campus, whether it be the 560-seat theatre, the sound-proof music rooms, the 1,500 square meter indoor gymnasium, the dance studios etc. are all designed to provide more opportunities for the pupils to engage in extra-curricular activities both during the school day, and through activities like the Academy Programme running on evenings and weekends. The aim is that the entire campus will be a hub of community activity, open to use by external vendors, sports clubs and competitions.

At the press conference after the launch ceremony of the Wellington Academy Programme, we went off topic for a question. We asked Carlton Palmer for his predictions for England in the World Cup. He was quite optimistic about England’s chances, saying that he felt that England has a fresh squad with a lot of young players trying to prove themselves. Mr. Palmer mentioned that in recent youth tournaments, England has had quite the success and he expects at least a birth to the quarter finals. So far, the FIFA has kept surprising us, England is going to meet Panama this Sunday. We don’t know if there will be more surprises, so let’s wish them good luck.

Last but not least, for the ones who are not familiar with Wellington College, let us brief you: Wellington College was originally established in the UK by Queen Victoria in 1859. Since then, Wellington College has built up quite the reputation for themselves as one of the most highly respected independent schools in the UK. They take pride in their wonderful facilities, faculty, and their educational philosophy that develops pupils, known as Wellingtonians, who embody the Wellington Identity. In 2006 they were the first school in the world to implement well-being classes as a core subject for children, and have a strong tradition of pastoral care, where every child is given an individual education. They recently won the “Boarding school of the year” award from the TES Independent School Awards in 2018 in the UK, and are regularly featured in the news for educational innovations.
