Wellington College: Celebrating 160 Years of Academic Excellence

Wellington College was granted its Royal Charter in December 1853 as the ‘Royal and Religious Foundation of The Wellington College’. The College was designed by John Shaw Jr (1803-1870) with Queen Victoria laying the foundation stone in 1856.

On 20th January 1859 (160 years ago last Sunday), the first 76 Wellingtonians, boys aged between eleven and fifteen, arrived at the College to begin their education. A week after the boys arrived, Queen Victoria performed the official opening ceremony.

Wellington College in England was founded by Queen Victoria as the national monument to Britain’s greatest military figure, the Duke of Wellington, who also served the country with distinction twice as Prime Minister. Queen Victoria herself remarked that the Duke of Wellington was ‘the greatest man this country has ever produced’. The school was dedicated to be, and indeed has become, a living monument of the Duke of Wellington in perpetuity. Thus the story of Wellington College began. 160 years later, the College is one of the most respected schools in the United Kingdom and transforming education for girls and boys.

In the past decade alone, this vibrant and popular co-education school has reached new heights in our rapidly changing interconnected world. The school has taught and educated thousands of pupils or – as the school names them – Old Wellingtonians. (OWs)

They have been fervent supporters of the school over the years, with continuing contact and presentations being undertaken by the OWs; this is a truly unique school of the 21st century. Continuing links with the British Royal family also remain strong, with HRH Queen Elizabeth and her husband, HRH Prince Philip, regularly visiting the College. Few schools have such deep ties with history, and such a proud heritage.

In 2009, Wellington College in England made the decision to bring the education, philosophy, and ethos of Wellington College beyond the shores of the United Kingdom to an ever-expanding international community. Wellington College International Hangzhou is the third international school in China that is committed to providing a first-class, well-rounded education for pupils both inside and out of the classroom. As with all Wellington College schools, the Wellington Values and Identities form the heart of Wellington holistic education.
