My third time at the Marriot Executive restaurant—read about my previous excursions here and here—was a charming night of hobnobbery, business card exchangery, and Italian food uh, eatery.
Our night started off at the GM’s Cocktail Party in the charming Resident Lounge, where we enjoyed free flowing cocktails, wine, and Spanish tapas and popcorn chicken aka American tapas. Although you wouldn’t know it from my svelte physique and preternaturally reasonable attitude, I’ve never really learned the art of restraint when it comes to open bars and endless tapas; an obligation to talk to people, a closed kitchen, or the sweet embrace of death are the only things that actually stop me from eating and drinking forever. Mercifully, a lot of great people were there to keep me distracted from the amazing food and drink, and properly ashamed for overindulging.

Eventually we were herded into the dining room, where we settled down for an Italian dinner. Mind you, I wasn’t prepared for this, I hadn’t read the brochures, and my handler had failed in setting expectations for me; I had assumed my responsibility was in the complete consumption-destruction of the first dinner—which I had joyously taken to—I hadn’t prepared myself for second dinner.
I drank more wine, and a margarita.
Second dinner started us off with a delicious Insalate (68RMB), a delicious… well, insalate is Italian for “salad”, but this was quite a bit more than that, a Caprese style salad with delicate slices of grilled eggplant and tomato, with mozzarella and pesto… the longer I’m away from America the more I’ve become convinced that every culture but America has learned how to tame the eggplant better than us. This was a great starter, a bridge between the GM’s Cocktail Hour and the hours of dinner socializing to follow.

Minestrone Soup (48RMB) followed, and was served with a delicious thin-sliced garlic toast. I want to emphasize that this isn’t your normal toast, this is a light and crisp Melba-style toast, crispier and thinner than a normal toast. I really wanted to steal Jingjing’s but I didn’t have enough red wine in me.
I drank more wine, and some coffee.

I managed to squeeze in a Spaghetti Bolognese (48RMB), with perfectly plump—is it cliché to say al dente in a review about Italian food? —anyways, they were great. I was lucky it was a set menu night, otherwise I’m sure the lasagna I absolutely would have tried would have had me hibernating in a cave until next spring.

An americano compacted my earlier accomplishments such that I could squeeze in a—wait wait wait, I totally forgot, this is China and I should NOT be taking this for granted: all second dinner, they had full baskets of bread, and it was amazing, and it was crisp and light on the outside and I buttered the hell out of it and definitely exceeded my carb limit for the next year or so—anyways back to the beginning of this paragraph, I had a tiramisu (48RMB) to finish my night.
