Hangzhou Victoria Kindergarten (Landscape Bay) opened in 2013. As part of the Victoria (China) Education group, Hangzhou Victoria has inherited it’s educational philosophy, curriculum and managerial structure; with humanities and innovation driving our educational practice.

 IB Kindergarten Unveiling Ceremony

Hangzhou Victoria Kindergarten (Landscape Bay) was officially authorized as an IB PYP kindergarten in Hangzhou on May 7th, 2019, and the IB Kindergarten Unveiling Ceremony and K3 Exhibition was held in the Landscape Bay campus on May 16th, 2019. That made it the first IB PYP Bilingual Kindergarten in Hangzhou. Chief Principal, 66th World President of World Organization for Early Childhood Education (OMEP), Vice Chairperson of UNICEF-Hong Kong, and Member of Women’s Commission and Family Council - Dr. Maggie Koong, and the board members of the school attended this ceremony.

In 1998, Dr. Maggie Koong, the current president of Victoria (China) Education Group, brought Victoria to mainland China. By 2019, Victoria Kindergarten has opened 10 kindergartens in Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou and Shenzhen.

On the ceremony, Dr. Maggie Koong showed the great joy and affirmed the work of kindergartens in the past five years. It took everyone a lot of work to achieve what they’ve got today. 

Dr. Koong said: "I require every Victoria kindergarten to do a good job, to achieve the quality consistent with our brand. Therefore, every kindergarten in mainland China has to get the qualification of “First-class Kindergarten” and “International IB”. We are the first kindergarten to introduce the IB PYP project into the mainland. As early as 2007, Shanghai Victoria Kindergarten Hongqiao has passed the IB certification, becoming the first IB PYP world kindergarten in mainland China. At present, nine of the 10 kindergartens under the Victoria Education Group (China) are already IB-authorized schools. We are the first independent kindergartens to receive IB certification in Shanghai, Shenzhen and Hangzhou”.

The board member of Hangzhou Victoria Kindergarten - Shirley Jin said “We are very proud of such achievements today after five years of teaching experience. At today's K3 learning achievement exhibition, many parents are gratified for their children's growth. IB concept advocates integration and reflection in teaching. In the future, we will continue to work to integrate IB concept into local textbooks, train our children to be the little citizens of the world, and reserve follow-up force for the development of Hangzhou.

What is IB PYP?

The International Baccalaureate® (IB) Primary Years Programme is a curriculum framework designed for students aged 3 to 12. Till the end of 2018, the number of IB schools in China reached 155.

The PYP transdisciplinary framework focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both at school and beyond.

Informed by research into how students learn, how educators teach, and the principles and practice of effective assessment, the programme places a powerful emphasis on inquiry-based learning.

By choosing to implement the PYP, schools will develop students’ academic, social and emotional wellbeing, focusing on international-mindedness and strong personal values. The PYP nurtures independent learning skills, encouraging every student to take responsibility for their learning.

Teachers begin with finding out what the children know and what their experiences have been. They then design, plan and implement ‘Units of Study’, which they deliver through creating an engaging, ‘inquiry based’ learning environment. This allows children to be creative and imaginative in their exploration of their daily environment.

Children actively participate in many and varied hands-on activities that cover all areas of the curriculum. Mathematics is taught by using concrete resources so that the children have a clear understanding of an abstract concept, e.g shape and space. In science, children will carry out many experiments, e.g growing plants in the dark, in the sunshine, with water and without water, in order to see what plants need to survive. These lessons all connect under the banner of a Unit of Inquiry, such as “Sharing the Planet”.

Art, music, and physical activity are scheduled activities and an important part of learning.

The PYP is a fun and engaging way to learn that ensures that knowledge and understanding stay with the child.

K3 Exhibition

The children held a learning achievements exhibition in the campus. Every child became a promoter of their own project. They enthusiastically introduced their learning results to parents and teachers in Chinese and English. Their artistic handicraft and project showed rich imagination and creativity.

Lydia Wu, director of Hangzhou Victoria Kindergarten (Landscape Bay) said: "This exhibition is a recent exhibition of our theme exploration, which lasted about eight weeks. Children can explore any topic they are interested in during this period. Some of these topics are presupposed by teachers and then lead to questions. For example, teachers showed them the music from different countries, then guided them to understand different instruments from those countries, and then the children will make those instruments by themselves. Some others topics are brought by children themselves.

Later on, the guests and the parents enjoyed an exquisite afternoon tea that prepared by the chef and his team at Hangzhou Victoria Kindergarten. We were so impressed by the homemade sandwiches by the children.
