The Song Dynasty (960-1279AD) was a period of economic prosperity in China. Contrary to other dynasties that favoured military might and strength, the Song Dynasty was a gentler, more elegant period that promoted a high degree of openness in society and saw culture and art flourish. In the later part of the dynasty, the capital moved south to Hangzhou, resulting in the name Southern Song Dynasty. Considering Hangzhou’s history, Ascott Raffles City Hangzhou has created a special apartment suite with a Southern Song theme to let customers enjoy the grace and beauty of that time.

Upon entering the 2-bedroom Southern Song Dynasty theme apartment, guests are greeted with a large painting welcoming them to step “Back to Nansong Dynasty”.

Walk further in past the common bathroom, a quick glance inside reveals a set of dark blue pajamas hanging ready for use.

Then the living area opens up to reveal a water colour scene from Jiangnan. The gauzy curtains depict a landscape of rolling hills and water in shades of blue and green. The floor-length curtains extend the width of the living area and you can easily feel like you are walking through a Chinese poem. Sofa cushions continue the theme and are embroidered with cranes, a symbol of longevity.

The dining table can comfortably sit 4 people and you are surrounded with the beautiful, romantic Chinese paintings. The dinnerware that you will use is a set of delicate glass bowls and elegant light green celadon ceramic plates.

The master bedroom has bamboo design motifs and the bedding is in a dusky green tone. Bamboo is an autumn and winter plant which complements the mature age range of the occupants of a master bedroom.

In ancient China, people sleep with a rectangular hard pillow. Here Ascott has prepared a similar shaped rectangular pillow for guests, but it is made of soft foam cushion to be suitable to our modern day preferences.

In the master bathroom, you will see that the bathroom accessories also follow a Southern Song design.

A second set of pajamas is prepared and there’s a full bathtub with scented bath salts to relax in.

The second bedroom is designed for a younger occupant, with dark blue bedsheets and cherry blossoms symbolizing the spring and summer of youth. Tea sets in both rooms invite guests to take some time out to make some Chinese tea.

- Learn About Objects of Interest -

Throughout the apartment, Ascott has thoughtfully placed some artistic and culturally rich objects accompanied by a QR code that you can scan on WeChat to read more about. You can have fun going around the apartment and learning about each object, as if you are in an art gallery or museum.

In the Song Dynasty, people used a kind of charcoal powder to brush their teeth. Ascott has provided a hygienic tooth cleaning powder so you can get an idea of how it feels like to brush your teeth like in the Song Dynasty.

The beautiful objects that you see around the apartment can all be purchased, such as the calendar, tableware, pajamas, tea set, etc. so that you can bring the lovely objects back home with you.

My favourite cultural object in the apartment was a special calligraphy paper that you can write on over and over again. You use water to write the characters and it appears like ink on the paper. Later, when the words dry, they magically disappear from the paper and you can keep writing again.

I sat down for a while and did nothing but practicing calligraphy. I hadn’t done brush writing since my high school days and it was a real pleasure, almost meditative.

Remember Xiao Ya, the room service robot? To celebrate the launch of the Nan Song theme room, Xiao Ya also got a make-over and now whirls around in a pretty turquoise blue “Nan song” style design.

Spending a night in this Southern Song theme apartment was a calming, serene and culturally engaging experience. I liked that not only can you enjoy the beautiful interior, but you can also engage in some cultural activities like calligraphy, brushing your teeth with powder and reading about the art objects in the apartment.
