The last few weeks have been extremely busy and exciting at Wellington College International Hangzhou. Below is a recap of some of the activities that have been happening around school.

Maths Week: “Maths is Everywhere!”

"When will I ever use this?" is a question maths teachers often hear from their pupils, and over the past week, Wellington College International Hangzhou set about to answer that exact question by celebrating Maths Week from October 21st to 25th.

In every lesson last week, pupils applied their maths knowledge and skills to their different subjects. Pupils learned how maths in dancing was important; they counted steps to keep in time and used their geometry skills to make dancing more interesting. In science, children made lava lamps and looked at portion sizes to make the most effective lamps. The children in Year 2 experienced coding and how numbers are used all the time in ICT. Year 5 pupils used their maths knowledge to build bridges and Year 3 pupils used their measuring skills to bake banana muffins. In art, the pupils looked at creating shapes with strings and making patterns. In PE they were measuring distance and estimating time. It was also so wonderful to see the children work together across year groups and really collaborate together to learn and to experience new things.

‘Maths is Everywhere’ provided an invaluable opportunity to discover maths beyond the curriculum and explore how often pupils use maths both in and beyond the different subjects pupil study in school. It also allowed teachers to highlight the importance of a growth mindset in their pupils. STEAMing Ahead – Imagining Education

Like Never Before

Wellington College International Hangzhou aspires to provide their children with the skills, knowledge and values to be able to thrive in the 21st century. While they are proud of their heritage and traditions, their educational philosophy is firmly looking towards the future. An integral part of being able to operate successfully in the 21st century is having a deep understanding of new technologies, as these will pave the way for the industries of the future. At all levels, Wellington College International Hangzhou integrate STEAM into their curricula, allowing their pupils to turn theoretical knowledge into practical application.

On 28th October, Wellington College Hangzhou hosted a STEAM Demo Day organized by the China-Britain Business Council, which wrapped up the five-day International Digital Education Conference in Hangzhou. Six leading UK STEAM companies including Discovery Education, Games Workshop, MEL science and more held a workshops where pupils, teachers, parents had an opportunity to learn how STEAM can be integrated into the curriculum to enhance learning.

At Wellington, the College understands that the world is changing quickly. In essence, the College needs to prepare their students not only with knowledge and skills for today, but for jobs that don’t even exist yet. STEAM is a critical component in this. Wellington College International Hangzhou aims to expose their pupils to as many new technologies as possible throughout their time at the College, allowing them to become technologically literate, but with a purpose. At a time when technology dominates their lives, they must provide their pupils with the skills needed to use technology responsibly. Perhaps in the future, they will be the drivers of change, up-ending existing industries and making the world a cleaner, safer, more efficient place.

Coffee Mornings

Parents and the community are essential at Wellington. Starting from this academic year, Coffee Mornings have been held every two weeks to boost the communication between school and parents. Led by Ms. Kathryn Richardson, the principal of Wellington College International Hangzhou, together with the academic team, this is a great opportunity for parents to talk with the principal about the school curriculum and the vision for the school.

Parent Workshops

Besides the Coffee Mornings, there are various kind of parent workshops about the curriculum and subjects held regularly which give a clear picture about ‘what we learn and how we teach’ at Wellington College International Hangzhou to our existing parents. For example, on October 22nd, the performing arts team explained the music and drama curriculum including what level pupils should achieve in each year and how parents can support at home. On October 29th, the head of ICT delivered a workshop explaining how they teach programming and coding skills to pupils from a young age.

Community Events

The Wellington College International Hangzhou campus is a hub of activity not only for existing families, but for the entire Hangzhou community. On October 22nd, Wellington College International Hangzhou and United Family Hangzhou Clinic presented a first aid training for parents within the Hangzhou community. First aid training can provide many benefits, and can help parents rest assured that they are equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to help their children in an emergency. Through the training, parents learnt about the First aid basics, medical emergencies, injury emergencies, environmental emergencies and CPR Demonstration. The next Parent First Aid Training session will be held on November 19th. Get in touch with Wellington or United Family Hangzhou Clinic to learn more and register.
