Itinerary

After breakfast we pick up and set out! Our first stop takes us to a place long known by the name ‘Changming’, but after its feature in the 2006 movie ‘Yunshuiyao’, or 'cloudwater ballad', curiously, the movie name stuck! The Cloudwater Ballad scenic area features 53 well-maintained Tulou structures, the eldest of which being an estimated seven-hundred years old and dating back to the Yuan Dynasty. Of the 53, there are two specific Tulous that really deserve exploring: the first – He’gui Lou, built on ancient marsh-ground foundations; the second – the best preserved and most consummate in terms of architectural craftsmanship - the double-ringed round Tulou, Huai’yuan Lou. When evening falls, you will be presented with the rare opportunity of spending a night in the Tulou. Town-side lodging is available for the non-takers.

Itinerary

Invigorated after a night’s rest and a morning meal, the Tulou touring revs back into gear, driving this time in the direction of a different Tulou cluster. The Gao’bei ‘High-north’ Tulou cluster, also known as the “King Tulou” scenic area features the solemn Chengqi Lou – its circular outer structure stands four storeys tall and is 62.6 in diameter, protecting four embedded sets of concentric circular rings of buildings on the inside, altogether containing more than 400 separate rooms. This mammoth dwelling deserves the title “King Tulou”. Nearby there are also the Qiaofu Lou and Shunyuan Lou, all well worth a look.

After lunch it’s time to switch things up and meet the prince. The Hongkeng Tulou cluster is the most commercially mature of the Tulou tourist zones and features the “Prince Tulou”, Zhencheng Lou as its centerpiece. The prince boasts a fusion of ancient traditional Chinese ‘Fengshui’ design and modern western architectural arts, making it completely different from any of the other Tulou. For those after something cuter, the 17.4-meter diameter mini-Lous, like Rusheng, Lin’jiajia, Fuyu are your primary targets in the area.

Itinerary

A new morning! Join with a local tour guide to dive deep into the most historic and best-preserved ancient city block in Xiamen – Bashi Street. Nibble on the best local snack street foods on Zaogu Meishi Street, with unmissable Xiamen snacks like the Yuehua Satay Noodles, Yaben ‘Wheat Milk’*, Ah Chi pie cakes, Ah Jie Five-spice deep-fried Dim Sum Sausage Roll**. Afterwards, it’s time for a different kind of hunt. The old-timey Jizhi Department Store is the kind of place to find unexpected souvenirs to keep for a lifetime, so browse the forgotten rustic antiques and Chinese books from decades past (note: some of the items here are closer to a century old!).

Next, we shift down a gear and enjoy an air of true Southern style. Move to a local traditional Southern teahouse to enjoy a pot of real ‘Tie Guanyin’ Oolong – one of the 10 Famous Teas of China. After tea we’re also going to read into the stories that make up the history of the streets of old Xiamen, at the Laojie ‘Old Streets’ Museum. Our final destination will be the fresh seafood market – the home of Xiamen’s most industrious seamen, and its liveliest market.

All tuckered out after our market-going and a jam-packed tour, we will return to Xiamen.

About the snacks:

* Yaben ‘Wheat Milk’: a local specialty breakfast porridge, made with egg, wheat, barley, and a secret recipe brown sugar sweetener.

**Ah Jie Five-spice Deep-fried Dim Sum Sausage Roll: not exactly a sausage and not exactly a dim sum – but delicious! It’s probably just coincidence, but this is an amazing Chinese take on a western classic hot food.
