10 Years Retrospective Review : Ice Hotel, Sweden
The Ice Hotel itself is carved from the harvested frozen waters of the Thorne River, each year the transient building simply melts flowing back as water into the river, back to nature.
The Ice Hotel brings creatives from all walks and backgrounds and is as much about community as it is about creating each room in frozen water. With techniques of ice carving shared from veterans to the new cohort, meal times were particularly good with interesting stories shared from the various backgrounds, the cold and bitter conditions a shared bond to build future freindships. The short days and long nights (daylight only for a few hours 10:00 - 13:00), together with -30 degree temperatures further added to the sense of camaraderie.
The rooms design was inspired by the then forthcoming re-release of Disney’s 1980’s classic ‘Tron’, Ian and Ben were supported by Disney UK and Oakley to create the futuristic room that seemed on stark contrast to the immediate context, but that’s the point; escapism, illusion and the unexpected.
The room was an opportunity to trial some new lighting technology; A risky proposition as threading electrified electroluminescent cable lighting through frozen water would be a challenge, particularly as the organic based Sulphur in the lighting degrades upon exposure to water.
The build was about experimentation, with time needed to perfect how to move, handle and work with the ice. At over 100KG per each slab of ice it was hard physical work for 14 hours a day at -8 degrees inside the snow room. Learn how to cut with electric chainsaws, routers, ice chisels and bear saws as wellas custom tooling to assist moving and shaping the blocks. Some days it was so cold that ice blocks would have to be handled carefully or risk them shattering due to being so brittle.
It was a humbling experience being in this far northern part of the world, to see the northern lights, be at the mercy of Mother Nature, be in awe of the surroundings and witness the effects of the seasons. At the time of our visit the climate crisis was becoming prescient, with global warming the descriptor at the time. Now ten years later the Ice Hotel's existence and all that it stands for with respect to Mother Nature and her seasons now seems even more precarious and fragile, I would hope that now in its 30th year the Ice Hotel can continue to inspire through artistry and creativity, raising awareness for the current climate emergency.
