Santo Hall is pleased to announce artist Bu Yunjun’s solo exhibition, “The Elephant in the Room,” at the gallery’s space in the 798 Art District, curated by Fiona He. The show focuses on the artist's latest artistic explorations and reflections in painting and photography.

After graduating and receiving an education in the oil painting department, Bu Yunjun has been using photography as his primary medium of art practice. During the pandemic, self-isolation made it difficult for the artist to process his photos, which unexpectedly made him return to the painting. This increasingly congested and competitive path turns out to steer the artist to expand the boundary of his practice, presenting new directions in his works. In his latest works on view in this exhibition, Bu Yunjun adopted a set of "production" methods: using cell phone photos taken casually as a starting point and repeatedly laboring through works such as ink on silk, oil pastel on canvas, and oil pastel on paper, infusing personal sensibilities into the subtle crevasse between appearance and concealment of the image.

In the Untitled series, Bu Yunjun repeatedly layers ink on a cloth-covered board and then finely polishes it to achieve a reflexive quality, allowing the image to "appear" faintly. The unique material characteristics of the oil pastel become the means of generating forms that realistically embody the multiple and ambiguous meanings of the image. In the Untitled - Flowers series, the double-sided qualities of ink on silk are presented separately to explore the many patterns between light, object, and subjective experience.

In English, optics and optic come from the same root, underscoring their semantic interdependence. Light brings "shadow" and "appearance" to things, just as photography introduces "light" and "darkness." This exhibition begins with a photograph Bu Yunjun took a few years ago in his studio, in which he intentionally obscured parts of the lens to interrupt the confines of capturing something realistically. This way of "obscuring" the image has been carried over as traces and clues in his recent works. The artist’s previous photographic experience has allowed him to elucidate his attitude towards image-making and transfer and translate the paradigm between realism and resistance to image-making across other art mediums.

Whether Bu Yunjun adopts photography’s "mechanical reproduction" to create artworks or returns to the relatively "traditional" and "hands-on" approach to painting, his intention is neither to invent new techniques nor to be setback by them. This exhibition aims to present the artist’s creative concept and attitude in the context of his art practice. Obviously, one would not see an elephant in the exhibition hall. Whether they can grasp the metaphor of "the great image has no form," a playful "missing the woods for the trees," or even an unexpected encounter with the "elephant in the room," the clues are found in the artworks.
