The Shuping Scholarship is now accepting applications

On the Shuping Scholarship’s 80^th anniversary, Wellington College China and the Shanghai Education Development Foundation launched the Huili School Shuping Scholarship programme. In the spirit of returning to society that which was gained from it, this programme's mission is to provide full financial support for outstanding pupils to receive a top-quality bilingual education at Huili.

19^th January 2021 witnessed the Shuping Scholarship plaque unveiling ceremony at Huili School Shanghai. Ms Joy Qiao, Founder and Chairman of Governors of Wellington College China, and guests from Shanghai Educational Development Foundation and Soh Bing Scholarship Alumni Association Shanghai were in attendance.

The importance of educational choice
The Shuping Scholarship was established in Shanghai by Mr Gu Qianlin in 1939. For 80 years and three generations, this programme benefitted a large number of pupils who had experienced poor study conditions. To date, the programme continues to operate across China as the country's longest running scholarship programme with the greatest number of beneficiaries. Its launch at Huili School Shanghai brings new vitality to this long-celebrated scholarship programme.   Like other social welfare scholarships, the Shuping Scholarship is available for outstanding pupils from different schools. As a young pupil herself, Ms Joy Qiao was awarded the scholarship for her exceptional performance in high school.

This cooperation between the Shuping Scholarship and Huili School Shanghai is a glowing endorsement of our school's educational philosophy. Moreover, our school can integrate all available resources and utilise them accordingly, eventually providing full financial support for outstanding pupils who deserve a top-quality bilingual education at Huili.


Why is the Scholarship special?
The Shuping Scholarship is the highest-level scholarship offered at Wellington College China and is open to outstanding pupils from Chinese working-class families.It provides full coverage of recipients’ tuition fees, meals, uniforms and boarding fees, making it essentially a ‘110% scholarship’.Recipients whose academic results and conduct meet the scholarship’s requirements upon enrolment can reapply for the Huili School Shuping Scholarship each year until they graduate from High School. This means that recipients who show outstanding performance can receive up to millions of RMB in scholarship aid during their time at school.Furthermore, the Shuping Scholarship puts pupils in a better position to pursue their aspirations after they graduate from Huili School Shanghai. While they receive a top-quality bilingual education, they will also benefit from Huili's first-class university and career guidance, ensuring that they will transition to higher education with success.  We have no control of the conditions we are born into, but we can pursue things that our hearts yearn for. When pupils apply their intelligence, talent, ability and courage to their fullest extent, doors to new possibilities open up for them.
