香港科技大学（广州）首届3MT®演讲比赛初赛圆满结束
近日，香港科技大学（广州）（以下简称“港科大（广州）”）首届3MT®（Three Minute Thesis）演讲比赛初赛鸣锣开赛并圆满结束。比赛共吸引了30余名红鸟硕士班学生以及来自四大枢纽博士研究生参加。他们用生动有趣的方式介绍了自己的研究项目和成果，赢得了观众和评委的阵阵掌声。
本次初赛分为两个场次，5月11日为系统枢纽专场，5月12日则为语言教育学部组织的混合场。
在系统枢纽李世玮院长的指导下，系统枢纽为十余名报名选手精心组织了赛前培训，并组成了由三名学域主任和三位助理教授组成的评审团。5月11日晚上，系统枢纽初赛遴选出三名选手晋级决赛。
在5月12日的混合场比赛中，评审团由港科大（广州）若干名具有丰富学术英语演讲研究及实战经验的教师组成，包括语言教育学部讲师刘焰华博士、张蔚老师，信息枢纽计算媒体与艺术学域实践教授Theodoros Papatheodorou博士，以及功能枢纽地球与海洋大气科学学域助理教授余柳倩博士。评委们根据参赛者的内容组织，沟通、演讲和表达技巧进行评分。经过评委们认真细致地评判和多名工作人员复核，最终评选出七名同学晋级决赛。

6月2日，成功晋级的十位选手将代表各自枢纽/部门参加港科大（广州）3MT®比赛决赛，角逐冠、亚、季军荣誉称号和最高达5000元人民币的研究基金奖励。另外，比赛将邀请全校师生观看比赛，观众们届时不仅可以投票决定“人民选择奖”（最受观众欢迎奖）的归属，还有机会赢得幸运大奖。

The first 3MT® (Three Minute Thesis) Competition of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) (HKUST(GZ)) has recently completed its preliminary rounds. The events attracted over 30 doctoral and masters contestants from the four academic Hubs (Function, Information, Systems and Society) and the Division of Red Bird MPhil (RBM) in the College of Future Technology. The contestants explained their research theses in a lively and interesting manner, winning the applause of the judges and audience.
Two preliminary rounds were organised, one by Systems Hub for its own students on 11 May, the other by the Division of Language Education for a mixed group of students on 12 May.
Under the leadership of Dean Ricky Lee, the Systems Hub carefully organised pre-event training for a dozen contests and formed a judging panel consisting of three thrust (division) heads and three assistant professors. On 11 May, three contestants were selected to advance to the final.
On 12 May, nearly 20 PhD and MPhil students from the Function, Information and Society Hubs and RBM participated in the preliminary. The judging panel consisted of faculty members well versed either in researching and teaching academic presentations including 3MT presentations or presenting at 3MT events. They include two lecturers from the Division of Language Education, Dr Yanhua Liu and Ms Wei Zhang, as well as Dr Theodoros Papatheodorou, a Professor from the Computational Media and Arts (CMA) Thrust of Information Hub, and Dr Liuqian Yu, an Assistant Professor from the Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences (EOAS) Thrust of Function Hub. The judges evaluated the presenters according to their content organisation, comprehension, delivery, and engagement. After much deliberation by the judges and multiple reviews by staff, seven students were selected to advance to the final.
The following 10 contestants advanced to the first HKUST(GZ) 3MT® Competition Final.
The above ten contestants will represent their units in the HKUST(GZ) 3MT® Competition Final to be held on campus on 2 June, competing for the titles of Champion, 1st Runner-up, and 2nd Runner-up, as well as research funds of up to RMB5,000. Notably, the live event will be open to all students, faculty and staff, and the audience will not only be able to vote for the "People's Choice" Award but also stand a chance to win lucky draws.

3MT® （三分钟论文比赛）是一项享有盛名的国际性学术交流赛事，2008年由澳大利亚昆士兰大学创立。比赛要求研究生在三分钟内使用一张幻灯片，对其论文及其重要性进行生动讲述。该赛事目前在全球85个以上国家、900多所院校开展。自2014起香港科技大学开始在清水湾校园举办赛事。2023年首届香港科技大学（广州）3MT®演讲比赛由语言教育学部发起组织，旨在培养学生学术交流能力、促进跨学科交流与合作，展示港科广学子研究成果和交流风采。
Background Information
3MT® (Three Minute Thesis) is a prestigious international academic communication competition event developed by the University of Queensland, Australia, in 2008. The competition challenges postgraduate students to concisely describe their theses and their importance to a non-specialist audience in just three minutes using one slide. The event is currently held in more than 900 institutions across over 85 countries worldwide. Since 2014, HKUST has been holding the competition at its Clear Water Bay campus. The 2023 HKUST(GZ) inaugural 3MT® competition was initiated and hosted by the Division of Language Education. The competition aims to enhance students' academic communication skills, promote interdisciplinary exchange and collaboration, and showcase the research profiles and communicative capabilities of HKUST(GZ) students.
