China Reports First New Local Coronavirus Case in 4 Days
While the number of virus cases has been falling over the past few weeks in China, there has been growing concern around imported cases as countries around the world step up their fight against the pandemic.
The new domestic infection came about in Guangdong province, and was linked to a previous imported case, according to local authorities. This is the highest number of new infections from abroad that China has seen in recent days, bringing the tally of imported cases to 314.
China has been stepping up measures to deal with cases from overseas, with Beijing and other regions forcing international arrivals to go into a 14-day quarantine. The civil aviation ministry also said it would limit passenger numbers on inbound international flights.
IN DETAILS
China reported its first domestic coronavirus case after a gap of three days as the country saw a surge in imported infections with 45 new cases and initiated stricter measures to avert COVID-19 to resurface and create a second wave of infections, health officials said on Sunday.
China's National Health Commission (NHC) said that 46 new confirmed cases were reported on the mainland on Saturday, including one domestic infection transmitted by imported cases in Guangzhou. Six deaths were reported from China, including five from Hubei Province, taking the death toll in the country to 3,261.
On Saturday, 504 people were discharged from hospital after recovery, while the number of severe cases decreased by 118 to 1,845, it said. The imported cases included 14 from Shanghai, 13 from Beijing, seven from Guangdong province, four from Fujian province and two from Jiangsu province, while the provinces of Hebei, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Shandong and Sichuan reported one case each, taking the total number of infections from abroad to 314, the NHC said.
By the end of Saturday, 273 confirmed cases, including four deaths, were reported in Hong Kong, 18 confirmed cases in Macao and 153 in Taiwan, including two deaths. Meanwhile, facing a sharp increase of COVID-19 cases from abroad, China will take strict measures to prevent imported cases, NHC spokesman Mi Feng told media here on Saturday. He called for unswerving efforts in preventing the COVID-19 epidemic from rebounding.
Tianjin, Beijing and several other cities have already initiated stricter quarantine rules under which the people will be confined to designated hotels for which they have to pay. Beijing also started diverting flights to neighbouring cities where the foreign returnees would undergo a 14-day quarantine.

Passengers who were cleared would then be permitted to reboard the plane, which would take them on to Beijing, it said.
The World’s Biggest
“Public Curfew” Begins
Today, India is attempting the world’s biggest social-distancing exercise. But for now, it will only last for 14 hours.
Why is it happening?
It's the latest attempt by the government to stall the rapid spread of Covid-19. It could also indicate that the government is testing the waters on whether an official curfew could actually be imposed across the country.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has kept up a steady stream of tweets since early morning, asking citizens to stay inside. “The steps we take now will help in the times to come. Stay indoors and stay healthy," he said.
Social media has been flooded with photographs of famous locations that are usually packed with people - but today are eerily quiet.
In India, where staples like rice, flour and pulses have always been bought in bulk, the fear of a lockdown has spurred people to double their usual orders.
Local grocery shops - seen on every street - continue to operate but with fewer items on their shelves.
Modi has asked Indians to hold a salute to medical professionals, emergency health care provider and government officials on Sunday evening. Millions are expected to ring bells and clap to honor their work.
Who will be affected by the 'public curfew'
The people who will be most affected are those who depend on a steady daily wage to put food on the table - including people who work as rickshaw pullers or street hawkers.
This is also a problem for shoppers. In a country where tinned food is almost non-existent, every household is dependent on the local hawkers who push carts piled with vegetables each morning through the neighborhood.
What's the bigger picture in India
More than 320 people have contracted coronavirus in India.
In the past few weeks, India has taken unprecedented steps to shut down its borders, cancel visas and ban passengers from certain countries from entering Indian airspace.
