In recent weeks, the lockdown that has affected most of China at some time or another during the first part of 2020 is slowly passing, and we hear that life is now able to return to normal. However, the reality of that scenario is far from the truth as many people have still not returned to work, or at least they have not returned to work the way things were before the first signs of the coronavirus emerged.
I see evidence that businesses are adapting to the changes pressed on them. For many, this means less staff, and for others, where possible, working from home. There are still huge numbers of students not at school despite the information that schools are reopening. Also, lots of students are now taking classes online.
An industry that has yet to recover is the tourist and travel sector. Those markets could remain static for some time to come, and as yet there is no way of knowing when things will improve for them.
When Beijing's new Daxing International Airport opened in late September 2019, it was hailed as an essential new airport for China, but mainly for Beijing, Tianjin and surrounding cities, including Baoding, Shijiazhuang, Langfang, ...
This new airport has been designed to become the world's busiest airport, with an expected annual capacity of 45 million passengers to be achieved by 2021, and estimated to top 100 million annually in the near future. The terminal building is the largest single-structure airport terminal in the world, with an area of more than 1,000,000 m2. It was completed on June 30, 2019.
In this issue we will look at the transportation options between Daxing airport and the cities of Tianjin, Beijing and Shijiazhuang. The airport is located near Langfang district, on the border between Beijing and Hebei Province. It is 46 km from Tiananmen Square, 130 km from Tianjin city centre, and almost 200 km from the city of Shijiazhuang, capital of Hebei province.

There are four different options of transportation available for you to choose from for travelling from Daxing Airport into Beijing city centre. These are:- Taxi, costing approximately CNY220 and taking around 80 minutes- Bus, costing CNY40 and taking around 90 minutes to arrive in central Beijing- Train, costing CNY30 and taking around 20 minutes- Subway, costing CNY35 and taking around 20 minutesTravel from Daxing Airport to Beijing by TaxiAirport taxis are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and can deliver you into central Beijing in around 80–90 minutes. This gives you the freedom to transfer directly from the airport to your home or business in comfort. The cost of CNY220 usually includes any tolls. However, at certain times of the day, the notorious Beijing traffic may extend your travel time, and this could mean an increase in the fare charged.Travel from Daxing Airport to Beijing by Bus
There are currently six shuttle bus services operating from Daxing Airport into the city centre of Beijing. Lines 1–4 operate from 7.30 a.m. through to 11 p.m., line 5 operates from 7 a.m. until 11 p.m., and line 6 is a night service that begins at 11.30 p.m. and continues until after the arrival of the final flight that day. Line 1 operates to and from Beijing's main railway station. Line 2 takes passengers to and from Beijing West Railway Station, while line 3 operates between the airport and Beijing South Railway Station. The line 4 bus service may be used by passengers going to and from Tongzhou, while line 5 caters to passengers wishing to travel to and from Fangshan. The night bus service of line 6 operates to and from Xuanwu Gate. The buses begin operating from Beijing to the airport at 5 a.m. each morning and continue until 8.30 p.m., and each line has buses running at intervals of approximately 30 minutes.Travel from Daxing Airport to Beijing by TrainThe Beijing- Xiong'an Intercity Railway has been extended to include a link from Daxing Airport, and this is now open, enabling passengers to travel to Beijing West Railway Station in just 20 minutes, with tickets costing CNY30. Currently, however, there are only 4 trains per day in either direction. By 2022, this line will be further extended to connect passengers to the cities of Langfang, and Yizhuang, the district of Tongzhou in Beijing, and to the Beijing Capital Airport.Travel from Daxing Airport to Beijing by Subway
The New Airport Subway Line is the latest addition to Beijing's metro system and connects the airport with Caoqiao Station, with travel taking just 19 minutes, and tickets costing CNY35. This line operates from 6.30 a.m. until 10.30 p.m., with a waiting time between trains of 8.5 to 10 minutes. This new airport line will be extended in the future to take passengers into the Lize Business District. Line R4 or Transit Line 20 will come into service linking Beijing's two international airports together, with stops at Xinghuo and Beijing Railway Station. For travel from Caoqiao Station to Daxing Airport, the first train of the day leaves at 6 a.m.Daxing Airport to Tianjin
There are currently three options available to you should you want to transfer from Daxing Airport to Tianjin. These are:
- Taxi: This option is definitely the easiest choice at this point in time, but will cost around CNY360 and take about 90 minutes.- Bus: This second option will cost CNY75 and take around 150 minutes, or 2.5 hours.- Train: This stressful combination of train and subway travel will cost around CNY90 and take at least 95 minutes with allowing time to transfer from one train to another.Travel from Daxing Airport to Tianjin by TaxiThere is currently no set price for taxis between Daxing Airport and Tianjin, and some negotiation might be required. The 130 km trip should cost around CNY360 and take 90 minutes, but this depends on the traffic conditions and your drop off point in Tianjin. You will also be expected to pay a surcharge for the tolls and an additional 20% fee for night journeys. Travel from Daxing Airport to Tianjin by Bus
Possibly the best option on this route is to take the intercity bus, which takes around 2.5 hours to travel to Tinajin Tongsha Coach Station in the city centre or to Tianjin West Bus Station, located close to Tianjin West Railway Station.Travel from Daxing Airport to Tianjin by TrainThere is not currently a direct train service between these two locations, though there will be a service as from 2022. Until then, it requires taking at least 4 trains or a combination of trains and subway, which results in an exhausting and time-consuming journey. When the new direct line opens, trains will travel at around 250 km/h and reach Tianjin West Railway Station in just 36 minutes. The current options are as follows:
1.You can travel on the new airport subway line to Caoqiao Station, then change to line 4 to travel to the Beijing South Railway Station. Once you arrive at Beijing South Railway Station, you have several high speed trains options to take you to your preferred railway station in Tianjin, West, South or Tianjin station.2.The intercity airport train runs from Daxing Airport to Beijing West Railway Station and takes 20 minutes, but there are currently only four services per day on this route. From Beijing West station there is only one service each day to Tianjin, departing at a little after midnight and arriving after 2 a.m.. The cost for this is less than CNY60, but it is not a convenient option.Daxing Airport to Shijiazhuang
Currently the only option for travelling between the city of Shijiazhuang and Daxing Airport is to use the intercity express bus. This service takes approximately 4 hours, but I was unable to find any information as to timetables or how many buses operate on any given day.
