China to increase international flights if virus under control

Flight operators can apply to the air regulator at the provincial level to run passenger charter flights

China’s aviation authority will consider increasing international flights as long as imported coronavirus risks are under control.

The maximum number of international flights now allowed is 134 a week under restrictions imposed on March 29 to stop cases of the novel coronavirus being imported.

But the number would be increased to 407 a week from June 1, said Li of the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC).

The CAAC has come under fierce criticism from Chinese people stranded abroad for drastically reducing the number of international flights in March.

Li did not elaborate on which carriers would be operating the new flights.

Mainland carriers are allowed to fly just one flight a week on one route to any country, while foreign airlines have been allowed to operate just one flight a week to China.

But many foreign airlines have not been flying to China at all because they suspended services before the CAAC flight curbs.

Li said it was likely that the number of flights would be fewer than 407, given expected fluctuating demand on some routes.

外控输入有效前提下考虑适当增加航班

中国民航局副局长李健表示，当前由于国际疫情情况较复杂，在国际线上仍然有一段较长的不确定期。但因市场有需求，民航局将保持在中国国内对境外输入有效控制的前提下，会考虑适当增加航班。当被问及近期关注度较高的“五个一”政策，李健表示，这一政策是基于3月12日国际疫情情况较复杂，在3月26日制定，3月29日执行的原则，即“一国一个航空公司一周一条航线一个航班”。最大计划量是134班，扩大到6月1号准备要执行的航班量将达到407班，实际执行量受航线市场因素影响将少于407班。

As of May 27th, 06:00, there were no new cases of novel coronavirus reported in the city. So far, of all the 56 imported cases, 55 have been discharged upon recovery and 1 are still hospitalized.

No imported suspected cases are undergoing test. No new locally transmitted cases or suspected cases were reported.

5 asymptomatic infection cases are undergoing medical observation right now, the health commission said.

Huawei’s Meng Loses Key Ruling in Extradition Case

A Canadian court ruled against the chief financial officer of Huawei Technologies Co. Wednesday in a decision that will continue proceedings seeking to hand her over to the United States to face criminal charges.

After nearly four months of deliberation, the Supreme Court of British Columbia determined that the U.S. allegations against Meng Wanzhou could be considered a crime if the actions took place in Canada. The decision on the so-called "double criminality" means Meng’s case meets a key threshold of Canada’s extradition law.

The ruling does not mean that Meng will be extradited to the U.S.
