PepsiCo in Beijing suspends operations after reporting 8 COVID-19 cases

Eight COVID-19 confirmed cases were reported in PepsiCo Beijing's chips branch, which caused the company to suspend operations there and triggered wide concerns over the safety of Pepsi products, with experts warning the public over novel coronavirus contamination.

Two of the eight patients had made purchases at the Xinfadi Market, where the latest outbreak in the city emerged.   

When an employee in the company that mainly produces Lay's chips was confirmed to be infected on June 15, PepsiCo immediately suspended production, all stocks were sealed off and outbound transportation was prohibited, said Fan Zhimin, from the publicity department of PepsiCo in China, at the Beijing government's anti-epidemic press conference on Sunday.

Fan said the company will follow the rules to ensure food safety.

PepsiCo beverage factories across the country, including its Beijing branch, did not find any coronavirus cases.

Beyond the branch in southern Beijing's Daxing district, Pepsi has chips companies in Wuhan, Central China's Hubei Province and Shanghai in the Chinese mainland.

After the Beijing municipal government and PepsiCo released the information on Sunday, Chinese consumers swarmed to online platforms to express their concerns over Pepsi products, mostly Pepsi's cola and chips. Some also recalled the most recent time they had consumed these products and considered having nucleic acid tests.

Feeling panic so much, some consumers planned to throw their Pepsi away in fear of food contamination and some decided to purchase rival brands.  

An insider from Beijing's food and drug regulator department said that the agency had not been told to remove the chips from store shelves as of press time.

Whether the Pepsi products were contaminated is still unknown and the company did not reveal which sections those eight infected employees worked in.

继通过“百事中国”对外强调百事可乐未受到新冠输入个案影响后，21日晚上21时许，百事食品（中国）有限公司再度通过“乐事”微信公众号，对外披露了百事食品公司在华遭遇新发地批发市场输入个案的更多细节，并强调“乐事薯片产品安全，病毒在整个产品供应链过程存活的可能性为零”。

百事中国表示，百事饮料的灌装厂生产经营一直有序开展，未曾停产停业，百事全系列饮料产品符合国家各项标准，一直依法正常供应。

据悉，此次出现确诊病例的这家食品公司为百事公司旗下的大兴磁魏路分厂，为薯片等膨化食品、粮食加工品的生产厂。

Latest finding of Tianjin 137th case

On the morning of June 22, Tianjin announced the latest findings of the virus tracing of newly confirmed local cases on June 17. Combining the epidemiological history and gene sequencing results, the preliminary judgment was that people were passed from person to person.

Zhang Ying, deputy director of the Tianjin Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) who was in charge of sourcing the virus, said that after multiple investigations, another chef at Conrad Tianjin was positive for serum IgM. The chef has been to Beijing many times in the past month and has been in public places such as restaurants and entertainment venues. The place stayed for a long time, but this person has not shown any symptoms so far. After returning to Tianjin, the chef had intersects with the confirmed cases in his work.

The genetic code of the 137th case virus in Tianjin is exactly the same with the virus in Beijing. All of them  belong to the European family "L type".

人传人！天津确诊病例最新判断来了！

今天上午，天津举行第146场新冠肺炎疫情防控新闻发布会。会上，天津市疾控中心副主任张颖就天津第137例确诊病例感染来源进行了详细解释，张颖给出最新判断：天津第137例确诊病例的发病原因是人传人！

6月22日上午，天津公布了6月17日新增本土确诊病例病毒溯源的最新发现，结合流行病学史和基因测序结果，初步判断是人传人。天津市疾控中心副主任张颖介绍，通过多次排查发现，确诊病例工作所在酒店的另一名厨师血清IgM阳性，该厨师近一个月曾多次赴北京，且在餐馆、娱乐场所等公共场所长时间逗留，但此人至今未表现出任何症状。该厨师回津后与确诊病例在工作中有过交集。

天津本土病例全基因组测序与北京新发地病例完全相同

经天津市疾控中心对本市第137例确诊病例呼吸道标本的新冠病毒全基因组高通量测序和序列分析，中国疾控中心复核，确认与北京新发地市场相关病例的病毒序列完全相同，属于L基因型欧洲家系分支I。

China suspends imports from U.S. meat processor Tyson Foods

China's customs authority has suspended imports of poultry meat from U.S. firm Tyson Foods starting Sunday, said the General Administration of Customs in a statement.

The meat processor recently reported COVID-19 cases among its employees, prompting an assessment of the list of meats eligible for export to China, said the statement.

Tyson Foods products already arrived or about to arrive in China will be temporarily suspended, said the customs authority.

暂停部分美国泰森禽肉入华

'Flight Pass' Deal for Unlimited Travel

Six months of unlimited domestic travel on China Eastern Airlines can be yours for just 3,322 yuan.

During a major online shopping festival Thursday, China Eastern Airlines, one of China’s three major state-owned air carriers, introduced a “flight pass” package for unlimited weekend travel to all of the airline’s domestic destinations.

Customers who purchase the pass will be allowed to travel economy class with very few restrictions. Priced at 3,322 yuan ($470), the product can be used for unlimited trips within China through the end of the year.

According to China Eastern, the promotion is tailored to families living apart, commuters flying to and from work, and students traveling to their schools. It was developed with the central government’s overarching economic goals — of guaranteeing people’s livelihoods and stabilizing the domestic job market, among others — in mind.

Despite recent signs of a COVID-19 rebound in Beijing, sales for the flight pass have taken off, even causing China Eastern’s mobile app to crash repeatedly on the first day the promotional package was available.

“只要3322元，周末随心飞”。6月18日这天，中国东方航空推出的3322元“周末随心飞”产品在航空圈和朋友圈刷屏。此前，山东航空也在直播中推出9块9抵100经济舱机票券、199元机票通兑券等特惠产品。另外，包括厦门航空在内的多家航企都针对复工复产需求定制了相关促销产品。疫情之下，航企们的自救仍在继续……

根据产品介绍，旅客购买该产品，可在2020年内的任意周六和周日，“不限次数”乘坐东航和上航航班，飞抵中国内地各大城市。产品采取实名制购买，自6月18日起开始销售，售完即止。每位旅客最多限购10套。

该产品推出后，立即刷爆朋友圈，东航的购买渠道一度被挤爆，点击购买链接后显示：“当前访问人数过多，请稍后再试”……此外在二手平台上，出现了不少转卖“周末随心飞”的链接，有人一次性购买10套产品，并尝试以每套4000多元的价格转卖。

对此，东航不得不在当天深夜发布一份关于“周末随心飞”产品相关情况的说明，称“本产品开始销售以后，我们发现网上有加价转手倒卖现象。在此郑重提醒，该产品仅在东方航空APP以3322元定价销售，请客户在官方渠道购买及使用，避免造成经济损失和使用问题。”

说明还指出，鉴于东航充足的运力，预计限量销售仍将持续一定时间，建议客户从容购买。系统已为成功预约的用户预留额度，将会继续通过短信通知完成购置手续。
