Deliveryman who sends 50 orders per day confirmed with COVID-19

A food delivery driver who delivered an average of 50 orders per day was among the confirmed Covid-19 cases reported on Sunday in Beijing, the local health authority revealed on Tuesday, raising concerns about further spread of the disease in the Chinese capital.

Zeng Xiaopeng, director of the Beijing municipal center for disease prevention and control, said at a press conference that the patient was a 47-year-old who worked as a food deliveryman for the Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.-owned platform Ele.me.

Since Jun. 1, the driver had visited a number of restaurants, grocery stores and shopping malls across the south and east of the city. On Sunday, he was picked up by an ambulance and transferred to a hospital’s fever department for Covid-19 testing. He tested positive that day, according to Zeng.

Whether Recovered Covid-19 Patients Are Immune

Medical researchers say the China coronavirus may be present in patients displaying no outward signs of illness

A new study conducted by Chinese experts found Covid-19 antibodies may start to diminish within two or three months in most asymptomatic and symptomatic patients after they are initially infected, raising doubts over whether antibodies could serve as “immunity passports” for people who have recovered from the illness.

The study published by Nature Medicine on June 18, performed by a team from Chongqing Medical University, also found that asymptomatic people had a weaker immune response to Covid-19 infections than those who had symptoms.

The researchers compared the immune responses of 37 asymptomatic individuals and 37 symptomatic patients and found 40% of the asymptomatic group gave a negative result in a test of blood serum for immunoglobulin G antibodies eight weeks after being discharged from the hospital, while the number for symptomatic group only stood at 12.9%.

Residents of central Beijing get nucleic acid tests for Covid-19 on Sunday.

The authors said in the paper, “Together, these data might indicate the risks of using COVID-19 ‘immunity passports’ and support the prolongation of public health interventions, including social distancing, hygiene, isolation of high-risk groups and widespread testing.”

No consensus has been made on how long and to what extent antibodies can protect people. The World Health Organization released a scientific briefing in April warning that “there is currently no evidence that people who have recovered from COVID-19 and have antibodies are protected from a second infection.”

China Completes Its Global Satellite Navigation System

The last satellite of the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System blasts off from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwest China's Sichuan Province at 9:43am on Tuesday

China launched the last satellite of the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System on Tuesday, marking the completion of the deployment of its own global navigation system.

A carrier rocket carrying the last satellite of the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System blasts off from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwest China's Sichuan Province on June 23

The satellite, the 55th in the family of BeiDou that means "Big Dipper" in Chinese, was launched at 9:43am (Beijing Time) and sent into the preset orbit by a Long March-3B carrier rocket from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwest China's Sichuan Province.

The satellite, designated to enter the geostationary earth orbit (GEO), was the last one of the BDS-3 system, which started to offer countries and regions along the Belt and Road as well as the world basic navigation service in December 2018.

BDS is one of four global navigation satellite systems in the world. The other three global navigation systems are GPS of the United States, Galileo of the European Union, and GLONASS of Russia.
