Largest Convention and Exhibition Center completed in Tianjin

Largest Convention and Exhibition Center in North China is completed in Tianjin (Phase I)

The National Convention and Exhibition Center (Tianjin) project, undertaken by China Construction Eighth Engineering Division, recently reached an important milestone. The main structure for phase one have completed construction and testing, and the construction of phase two's underground foundation is underway.

This project is located in Tianjin's Jinnan district. It is China's third largest international convention and exhibition center behind the two in Shanghai and Guangzhou. Upon completion, it will become the largest building of its type in northern China.

The project constitutes two phases. The first covers a total construction area of approximately 800,000 square meters, including 480,000 square meters of exhibition area and 320,000 square meters of integrated supporting area.

The total construction area of phase two is about 540,000 square meters. At present, the exhibition area and the supporting area of both phases are under construction concurrently.

In June 2021, the National Convention and Exhibition Center (Tianjin) will host its first event - the China Building Science Conference and Green Intelligent Building Expo. The expo's mission coincides with the construction project's goal of setting a benchmark for green intelligent building in China.

Tencent Surges After U.S. Court Upholds Stay on WeChat Ban

The Trump administration lost a bid to enforce its prohibitions against the Chinese-owned “super app” WeChat in the U.S. after appealing a judge’s ruling that the ban probably violates the free-speech rights of its users.

Upholding a trial judge, the U.S. Court of Appeals in San Francisco on Monday rejected the administration’s request for a stay of the preliminary injunction that prevents the administration from enforcing a wide range of measures, including barring the app from Apple and Google’s app stores for U.S. downloads, over purported national security concerns. Shares of WeChat owner Tencent Holdings Ltd. jumped as much as 3.1%, the most in two weeks, on Tuesday to an intraday record in Hong Kong trading.

The Trump administration has claimed that WeChat is a threat because Tencent is intertwined with the Chinese Communist Party, which can use the app to disseminate propaganda, track users, and steal their private and proprietary data. It’s a similar argument that the administration has used to target the TikTok app, owned by ByteDance Ltd., while also forcing a sale of that app’s U.S. operations.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Laurel Beeler in San Francisco issued a preliminary injunction on Sept. 19 -- the day before the ban was to go into effect -- at the request of a group of U.S. WeChat users. They argued the prohibitions would violate the free-speech rights of millions of Chinese-speaking Americans who rely on it. The app has 19 million regular users in the U.S. and 1 billion worldwide.

In Monday’s order, a three-judge panel said the administration hasn’t shown it will suffer “an imminent, irreparable injury” while the litigation plays out.

Even as Tencent gets a reprieve from the broader WeChat ban, the company may still face restrictions against the app’s payments services. U.S. officials have stepped up behind-the scenes talks about measures against WeChat Pay and Ant Group’s Alipay, people with knowledge of matter said earlier this month.

Cold-chain become the new hotbed for coronavirus

Mounting evidence and studies point to imported cold-chain products as the source of COVID-19 flare-ups in the Chinese cities of Beijing and Qingdao, a finding that one Chinese virologist said may help solve the puzzle of the coronavirus origin.

Scientists from Tsinghua University, the Beijing Center for Disease Prevention and Control, the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and other institutes published a paper last week in National Science Review, a publication under the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The paper shed light on the mystery of the viral origin that caused an outbreak in Beijing's Xinfadi market.

After comparing the nucleic acid sequencing and viral genome sequencing of COVID-19 patients with environmental and food samples from the Xinfadi market, scientists came to the conclusion that coronavirus from imported cold-chain food is very likely to have been the cause of the Beijing outbreak, and cold-chain transportation has become a new route for viral transmission.

Epidemiologists found employees in Xinfadi's beef and lamb sections were among the earliest to show symptoms, and five customers who contracted the virus previously had visited the section. However, neither the employees nor the customers had any contact with confirmed or suspected COVID-19 cases, nor had they visited high-risk areas.

The survey further suggested that employees from the beef and lamb sections had contact with imported salmon. A nucleic acid sample from the salmon showed its viral genome sequence had a high level of similarity with those from COVID-19 patients and environmental samples.

Moreover, the viral genome sequence showed a clear mutation compared with those obtained from previous samples in China, a proof that the virus that caused the Beijing Xinfadi outbreak was imported, said the survey.

Last week, the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced it had detected and isolated living coronavirus in a sample from the outer packaging of imported frozen cod, saying that it showed exposure to virus-contaminated packaging can lead to infection.

Yang Zhanqiu, deputy director of the pathogen biology department at Wuhan University, said that those discoveries together not only proved the risk of imported cold-chain products, but also pushed forward research into the virus' ability to survive, its structure, and most importantly, its origins.

If the gene sequence of the living coronavirus from the Qingdao cold chain matches that in human beings, it may help show the possibility that the virus likely originated from aquatic creatures, not bats or pangolins, Yang said.

He said if the theory stands, it could also refute accusations that use the virus as a tool to throw mud at China. "If an aquatic creature proved to be the host, it may overturn many previous studies of the virus' origin," he said.

Yet virologists said the origin of the latest flare-up in Kashi, Southwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region remains to be determined.
