Australian Wine Exports To China Plummet By 98%

Australian wine exports have dropped off a cliff in the Chinese market since the initial ruling of the anti-dumping tariffs measures.
Figures showed that Australian wine exports to China fell by US$158 million – from US$162 million in October to US$4 million in December, which is a 98% drop.

Red wine is the worst affected category undertaking the biggest hit. It showed the huge and immediate impact on Australian wine after the introduction of new measures.

On 28 November 2020, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce officially announced that it would charge a fee ranging from 107.1% to 212.1% for related imported wines originating in Australia.

On 10 December 2020, the Ministry announced again that it would impose a temporary anti-subsidy duties with additional fees ranging from 6.3% to 6.4% for all Australian wine suppliers.

Short Video Pioneer Kuaishou Primed for Biggest Tech IPO Since Uber

Kuaishou Technology, the operator of China’s most popular short-video service after ByteDance Ltd.’s Douyin, jumped 194% in its Hong Kong debut after a $5.4 billion initial public offering that attracted hundreds of billions of dollars of orders.
The shares opened at HK$338, compared with the IPO price of HK$115, valuing the Tencent Holdings Ltd.-backed firm at $179 billion. The company sold about 365 million shares at the top of its price range in a deal that ranks as the world’s biggest internet IPO since Uber Technologies Inc.’s $8.1 billion U.S. share sale in May 2019.

That spectacular rise conferred on Kuaishou a price tag rivaling ByteDance, which sought funds at a $180 billion valuation. If the gains hold, that would give Kuaishou the second-best debut ever for an IPO over $1 billion in the world, data compiled by Bloomberg show. It joins an already long list of floats that have popped on their first day of trading in recent months amid a glut of liquidity and ultra-low interest rates.

Kuaishou’s coming-out party broke records in Hong Kong for the number of retail investors subscribing to its shares and the amount pledged in the process. About 1.4 million mom-and-pop investors -- one of every five people in the city -- submitted HK$1.26 trillion ($163 billion) of orders, while institutional buyers stumped up almost $200 billion.

The demand matched the frenzy for the Hong Kong leg of Ant Group Co.’s mega IPO, which drew in HK$1.3 trillion of bids for its retail tranche, before the planned $17.2 billion offering collapsed.

Founded by former Google employee Su Hua and Cheng Yixiao as an app built around sharing animated GIF images, Kuaishou pivoted to short video in 2013 and added live streaming in 2016, landing footholds in what eventually became two of the hottest social media formats in the world.

HSBC mulls over moving top executives to Hong Kong or Singapore to strengthen Asia push

HSBC Holdings is considering relocating a handful of senior executives from London to Hong Kong or Singapore as Europe's largest lender bets its future on Asia.
The bank is mulling over moving London-based Greg Guyett and Georges Elhedery, the co-heads of its investment bank, to Asia, people familiar with the matter said, declining to be identified as the details are private.
Other direct reports to chief executive Noel Quinn are also being considered for relocations, placing more top decision-makers in the region where it makes the bulk of its money, the people said.

The moves are being considered as HSBC prepares to announce the outcome of a strategic review this month. A spokesman for HSBC in London declined to comment.

HSBC is planning to shift billions in capital to Asia, in particular to China, to reignite profitability as it scales back or exits businesses in Europe and the United States where less economic momentum and rock-bottom interest rates have made it difficult to make money.
Having more executives in the region will show investors and policymakers that it is serious about its expansion plans, at a time when an occasionally tense relationship with Beijing is on the mend.
HSBC is almost a year into a major restructuring that was partially held back by the Covid-19 pandemic, and is expected to update its plans and results on Feb 23.
