World Intelligence Congress opens in Tianjin

The fifth World Intelligence Congress, a major artificial intelligence (AI) event in China, kicked off in Tianjin today, highlighting frontier AI technologies and applications.

The four-day event, with the theme of "New Era of Intelligence: Empowering New Development, Fostering New Pattern," has attracted the participation of over 240 AI companies and institutions.


A series of activities, including forums, exhibitions and competitions featuring smart cities and transportation, smart manufacturing, and IT application and innovation, will be presented during the event.

Over the past four years, more than 10,000 scientists, entrepreneurs, educators and financiers from home and abroad have participated in the event to discuss the trends and future of smart technology.

TikTok parent’s founder Zhang Yiming to step down as CEO

Zhang Yiming, who helped found TikTok’s Chinese parent company and turn it into a globe-straddling internet giant, will step down as its chief executive at the end of the year to focus on long-term strategy, he wrote in a letter to employees dated Wednesday.


Mr. Zhang’s co-founder and head of human resources, Liang Rubo, will take the reins as chief executive at the parent company, ByteDance, which also owns a slew of other entertainment apps and web platforms in China and other countries.

Mr. Zhang, 38, is stepping away from day-to-day management at a time when China’s government is ramping up its scrutiny of big internet firms like ByteDance, leading other tech bosses to try to keep a low profile.

ByteDance, founded in 2012, is China’s first truly global internet company. With TikTok, it has achieved a level of commercial success and cultural influence that none of the country’s other tech powerhouses have managed outside China’s borders.

India, previously one of TikTok’s largest markets, banned the video app last year, citing national security. Under President Donald J. Trump, the White House threatened to do similarly, though court challenges stymied that plan. ByteDance and Mr. Zhang have held talks with Oracle and other suitors about selling TikTok to assuage the U.S. government’s concerns about the app’s Chinese ownership. No such sale has taken place.

EU parliament ‘freezes’ China trade deal over sanctions

The European Parliament halted on Thursday ratification of a new investment pact with China until Beijing lifts sanctions on EU politicians, deepening a dispute in Sino-European relations and denying EU companies greater access to China.
The resolution to freeze ratification passed with 599 votes in favour, 30 votes against and 58 abstentions.
The EU-China Comprehensive Agreement on Investment, agreed by negotiators in December after seven years of talks, aimed to put EU companies on an equal footing in China and cement Beijing's status as a trusted trading partner.

But Beijing imposed sanctions in March on 10 EU politicians.

The impasse is a setback for both China and the EU. Ratification of the pact would allow greater protection of European investment and intellectual property rights in China. China was hoping for improved international standing as a fair and respectful trading partner, European diplomats say.
不顾七年谈判达成共识，欧洲议会冻结中欧投资协定
当地时间20日下午，欧洲议会表决通过一项名为“中国对欧盟实体以及欧洲议会议员和国会议员的制裁”的动议，要求在欧洲议会批准中欧投资协定前，中国先解除对欧盟方面的反制裁。该动议并不具备法律效力，但因为中欧投资协定须经欧洲议会批准，20日的动向被认为是欧洲议会“冻结了”历经7年谈判达成的中欧投资协定。
