China hits goal of vaccinating 40% of population before end of June

China announced that it has achieved a key milestone, with 630 million people inoculated against Covid-19 by Thursday, as the country reached its target of vaccinating 40 per cent of the population by the end of June.
The country administered 24.7 million vaccine doses on Thursday alone, a record since the inoculation drive began in late March, bringing the total number to more than 1.12 billion.

Daily vaccinations accelerated from slightly over 2 million doses in late March to an average of more than 18 million in June as manufacturers scaled up production and local Covid-19 outbreaks startled residents into getting the shots.


"Over 40 per cent of the total population has been vaccinated. This is an important step towards establishing herd immunity," according to a statement carried by state broadcaster China Central Television on Friday.


The next target is the vaccination of 70 per cent of China's 1.4 billion people by the end of the year, but that will not automatically translate into so-called herd immunity - a state that can limit the spread of the virus, or lifting any restrictions, experts said.

With new virus variants circulating and the effectiveness of vaccines against them uncertain, it remains unclear when restrictions will be eased.

World Bank raises China growth outlook to 8.5%

The World Bank raised its forecast of China’s economic growth this year to 8.5% from 8.1% and said Tuesday that a full recovery requires progress in vaccinations against the coronavirus.
The report adds to positive signs for China, the first major economy to rebound from the pandemic. Factory and consumer activity are back above pre-outbreak levels, though authorities have re-imposed travel controls in some areas to counter outbreaks of new variants of the virus.

Chinese economic growth is likely to decline to 5.4% next year as the rebound from last year’s history-making global slump fades and activity returns to normal, the World Bank said.
Its forecast was an increase over a report in April that said China and Vietnam were the only East Asian economies to achieve a “v-shaped” recovery in 2020 with output back above pre-coronavirus levels.

Microchips for 40,000-yuan ‘quantum’ underwear cost only 3 yuan

Core parts of some so-called quantum consumer goods only cost 3 yuan, while finished products can be priced at nearly 40,000 yuan, a media investigation exposed. 
The wholesale price for the microchips used in so-called quantum bras and underpants is only 3 yuan each, while finished products can be priced at as much as 39,800 yuan, according to a report by The Beijing News. 

In recent years, the concept of quantum has entered the field of consumer goods with many products claiming to have health care and prevention functions such as promoting blood circulation and increasing body energy. 

Such so-called quantum products involve more than 10 categories of consumer goods including socks, bras, underpants, cups, cellphone cases, glasses and alcohols. The media investigation showed that an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) processing industrial chain has been formed for quantum products and the cost of OEM processing for quantum underwear is only 500 yuan per kilogram. 

China Consumers Association warned consumers on June 16 that so-called "quantum products" are pseudoscience and those magical effects are false publicity.

报道称，目前市面上有许多声称专门从事量子科学研究的厂商，可以代工从袜子、鞋垫到内衣、内裤、水杯、饮水机、手机壳等各类 " 量子 " 产品。
甚至，目前产业链方面已经开始按重量售卖量子产品，其中 " 内衣每公斤 500 元，水杯每立方 1000 元 "。
目前，全国已有多地市场监管部门立案查处了以量子科技为噱头的违法违规企业经营行为，涉嫌犯罪的移交公安机关，希望消费者也能擦亮自己的双眼，避免上当。
