8 Dead, 9 Missing As Hotel Collapses In Eastern China

A hotel collapsed in eastern China Monday, leaving at least 8 person dead and 9 others missing, state broadcaster CCTV reported.

Rescuers had pulled seven survivors from the rubble of the budget Siji Kaiyuan hotel in the popular tourist city of Suzhou.

CCTV said the rescue was "fully under way," adding that authorities were investigating the cause of the disaster.

The Siji Kaiyuan opened in 2018 and had 54 guest rooms as well as a banquet hall and conference rooms, according to its listing on the travel site Ctrip.

Images published by CCTV showed more than a dozen rescue workers in helmets at the site of the disaster, with the warped cladding of the hotel visible atop a mound of rubble.

7月12日15时33分许，江苏苏州市吴江区松陵镇油车路188号四季开源酒店辅房发生坍塌事故。前期发现有18名被困人员，后经对各种新增信息进一步分析甄别，发现还有5名未登记信息人员被困，现场被困人员总数应为23名。截至7月13日7时，经全力搜救，已救出被困人员14人，其中1人无伤已回家，受伤人员经全力救治，5人生命体征平稳，8人遇难。目前还有9名失联人员仍在全力搜救中。

12日22时20分，离雷达探测仪上显示的被困人员的位置越来越近时，为了避免被困人员受到二次伤害，无锡市消防救援支队指战员采用分组接力的方式，不间断利用小型工具和徒手进行挖掘救援。

23时22分，江苏南通消防救援支队在西北侧作业时将大型预制板移除后徒手对现场进行清理，已清理至倒塌层二层。无锡消防救援支队指战员利用吊车对大型板材进行吊装破拆。

China's Sinovac, Sinopharm to Supply Covid Vaccines to Covax

Two Chinese developers, Sinovac Biotech Ltd. and Sinopharm Group, agreed to sell their shots to the Covax program, pledging millions of doses that will give the global distribution effort a much needed boost. Covax, backed by groups including the World Health Organization, was set up last year to ensure equitable distribution of vaccines, but has fallen short of initial targets. 

Covax has shipped only about 102 million doses so far as part of a plan to deliver 1.8 billion by early 2022. The Chinese drugmakers will help bolster supplies immediately. Sinopharm agreed to provide 60 million doses from July through October, according to the vaccine alliance Gavi, which purchased the shot on behalf of Covax. Gavi has the option to acquire an additional 110 million doses later. Sinovac will supply as many as 380 million doses. 


Many nations are counting on Covax after falling behind wealthier governments in the bid to vaccinate their populations. Moderna Inc. joined other drugmakers in supplying the initiative in May, offering to provide as many as 500 million doses of its shot. Only a small fraction of the shipments are due to arrive this year.

The Covax program is heavily reliant on AstraZeneca Plc’s two-dose vaccine, but has been hamstrung by delays in shipments from the Serum Institute of India, a key manufacturer of those shots. India halted exports to tackle a devastating outbreak at home.

Both Sinovac and Sinopharm’s vaccines are based on an inactivated form of the coronavirus and were cleared for emergency use by the WHO earlier this year. They have already been widely distributed across the world after China struck bilateral deals, mostly with developing countries.

Some countries have offered a third dose, and others are open to mixing the Chinese vaccines with those from Pfizer and AstraZeneca as evidence emerges that such combinations could trigger a strong immune response.
国药和科兴新冠疫苗进入COVAX疫苗库
全球疫苗免疫联盟（GAVI）12日发布新闻公报，宣布已同中国国药集团和科兴公司分别签署了预购协议，这意味着国药疫苗和科兴疫苗进入“新冠肺炎疫苗实施计划”（COVAX）疫苗库，并可从7月开始向COVAX供应疫苗以用于发展中国家的新冠疫情防控。
COVAX由世界卫生组织、全球疫苗免疫联盟等主导。新闻公报介绍，考虑到这两种疫苗已经进入世卫组织紧急使用清单，可以立即向COVAX各参与方供货。根据协议，两家中国公司今年10月底前可向COVAX供货1.1亿剂新冠疫苗，后续长期供货。
中国常驻联合国日内瓦代表团有关人员表示，两家企业与全球疫苗免疫联盟签署协议，是中方以实际行动践行疫苗“全球公共产品”承诺的重要体现。中国政府一直积极鼓励支持中国疫苗研发企业参与COVAX，向发展中国家提供疫苗。中国目前已有多款新冠疫苗在国内获得紧急使用许可，同时还有多款疫苗正处于临床试验阶段。此外，还有多家中国疫苗企业表达了加入COVAX的积极意愿，我们期待有更多的中国疫苗早日进入世卫组织紧急使用清单，早日入选COVAX疫苗库，为全球团结抗疫作出积极贡献。

Tesla Unveils Much Cheaper Model Y in China After Months of Bad Press

U.S. electric vehicle maker Tesla Inc on Thursday introduced a cheaper version of the Model Y in China, where it faces increased scrutiny from both regulators and the public and growing competition from local rivals.
Tesla's sales of China-made vehicles slipped in June from the previous month, the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) said on Thursday.

The company, which makes Model 3 sedans and Model Y sport-utility vehicles in Shanghai, sold 33,155 China-made vehicles, including those for export, compared with 33,463 in May.

Domestic sales in China improved, however, with Tesla selling 28,138 China-made cars in June, up from 21,936 the previous month.
The standard-range Model Y launched on Thursday has a starting price of 276,000 yuan , after government subsidies are taken into account, about 20% less than a long-range Model Y.

The price cut allows its base Model Y to benefit from the subsidies, which are offered to new energy vehicles priced below 300,000 yuan.

Tesla dropped a standard-range Model Y from its U.S. website last year, as CEO Elon Musk said the range was "unacceptably low" at less than 250 miles.
The new version, which uses CATL's lithium iron phosphate batteries (LFP), can run 525 km (326 miles) per charge, compared with 594 km for the long-range version.
