The Battle of the Crisp Sandwiches!
This time round we're dividing the supper time by ten for one of the most convenient, and delicious, meals there is; crisp sandwiches! Each of us has come up with our own favourite sandwich recipe (turns out we're all cheese lovers), and we're asking you to vote (at the bottom of the article) on which is your favourite. I've probably already lost about half of my potential voters by putting Marmite in mine, but hey, keeping it real.
From those people who vote we will draw four lucky winners who will get a mixed four-pack of the King's Deli Crisps added to their next order absolutely FREE!
So, without further ado...

My sandwich of choice hits the spot in every single way. Getting crispy, crunchy textures and the sweet, salty, fruity and cheesy tastes to hit all the different taste buds. For me, the bread of choice is all important in making a sandwich special. That’s why I’ve gone for a slightly toasted white ciabatta bun. The full soft wheaty flavour with a crispy exterior is the bread of kings! Inside that wheaty goodness is a variety of fresh and powerful flavours: From the delicious smokey ham, the fruity sundried tomatoes and finished with a strong cheesy flavour that will last after every bite. I’ve gone with a gouda with black truffle because it is the ultimate cheese but if that isn’t available I would suggest that other Dutch cheeses such as an Edam would also work as you want a semi hard cheese to compliment the other textures in the sandwich
Ingredients:
1 Ciabatta sandwich bun
3 slices of Breakfast Championsmoked sliced ham
A couple of Iceberg Lettuce leaves
2 slices of cheese (my choice is Gouda with black truffle)
Tablespoon of sundried tomatoes
Half a packet of ‘The King’s Deli’ Salt & Black Pepper crisps
Method:
• Cut the ciabatta and toast until warm
• Butter the bread with a nice lurpak (salted is better)
• Add your lettuce to the bottom part of the bread
• Evenly place sundried tomatoes on top of the lettuce
• Place the crisps on top of the tomatoes
• On the other piece of bread, slice two pieces ofcheese and evenly place across the bread
• Put the smoked ham on top of the cheese
• (optional extra seasoning of salt & pepper)
• Put the two pieces together and go to town on that bad boy
(With no Truffle Cheese or Ciabatta Bread anywhere near it)
I grew up on crisp sandwiches as did many of you I am sure. Nice and simple does it, soft white bread, lots of butter and choice of crisp, flatten it down the hear that satisfying crunch and you are good to go. Who would have thought someone would try and make one with ciabatta bread? The mind boggles.
Sticking with the theme of simplicity I have opted to combine one simple but delicious sandwich with another. I will not get all technical and chefy with you all, I promise.
First my favourite flavour of crisps is Salt and Vinegar. When we had the chance to team up with The Kings Deli that was the first flavour we asked about.
Second, I love a good grilled cheese sandwich (Big shout out to CO Cheese! Keep doing your thing).
So, there you have it. Let’s combine the two and see what happens. What could go wrong??
Ingredients
2 Slices of soft white bread
As much butter as you can handle
Half a packet of The Kings Deli Sea Salt and Balsamic Vinegar Crisps
3 Slices of fake American cheese slices (Perfect for a good melt)
3 Slices of almost fake cheddar cheese (Same reason)
Some Pickles (Optional)
Worcestershire Sauce (I like it, but you may not)
Zero tablespoons of Sundried Tomatoes….
How to
Slice the bread if not already sliced.
Butter both slices on the outside.
Shake a bit of Worcestershire Sauce on the inside of the bread if you want.
Put one type of cheese on one side.
Put the other type on the other side.
Put the crisps on one side.
Take the other side and flatten the thing.
Heat a thick pan low to medium heat.
Place the sandwich on it and fry both sides until golden and the cheese has melted.
Serve with the pickles on the side.
KAPOW!
*This was written whilst the UK was in lockdown, but I couldn't work out how to set the vote up at that point, so some of the references are dated. UK supermarkets may well be making sandwiches again by now.
Plan A;
Straight off I went prawn mayo, as often, after a long flight back to the UK, this is the first taste of the brilliance of British cuisine my tastebuds sample. The first taste of home, the flavour burst of memory. Whilst I could have made a fancy version, made my own mayonnaise, fried up some prawns, added some coriander, a squeeze of lime, dry fried it in a cast-iron pan, I felt this would be cheating. So I asked my mum to grab a sandwich from the local shops, to which she said 'we don't go to the shops anymore because of the virus, but we do have a Sainsbury's delivery on Tuesday'. Turns out supermarkets have stopped doing sandwiches altogether because in the lockdown noone wants one, so...
Plan B;
What is the best (non-crisp) sandwich in the world? Cheese & Marmite, obviously. Absolute classic, been with me my whole life. It's what I had in my lunch box for school, alongside a pack of Wheat Crunchies crisps (my parents were/are hippies). In the school dinner room I took a look at both, the sandwich and the hippy crisps, and came to the same conclusion millions of kids before me had...crisp sandwich! Boy's a genius.
Ingredients
Two slices of bread
Cheddar (however much you want, preferably loads)
Marmite (large jar, because you're not eating it right if you get the smaller ones)
Butter
A whole packet of the King's Deli Original Sea Salt Crisps
Chutney (optional)
Spot the difference
Method
Butter your bread
Slather one slice with Marmite, and the other with chutney (I'm using the rhubarb chutney my parents brought over from England in January)
Grate your cheese and place on the Marmited half
Put about half of the crisps on top of the cheese (they're on the other side in the picture for the sake of the photo, but you'll either be losing the crisps or the cheese when you put it together if you actually make it that way)
Put the two sides together (giving it a little squeeze to get that satisfying crisp crunch sound)
Eat, with the other half of the pack of crisps, and a nice cuppa
I'll grant that it isn't the most visually appealing sandwich in the world, but that isn't really the point; it's bloody delicious.
Time to win some crisps!
