Nice Bit of Crumpet!

Will Breakfast Champion 2023-11-12

TLDR version: CRUMPETS! CRUMPETS! CRUMPETSCRUMPETSCRUMPETS!  AAAAAAAH!


Up there in the top three of things I missed so much from back in the UK that I learnt how to make them at home even before Breakfast Champion was a twinkle in Andrew's eye (along with proper English ale, and a variety of chutneys) are crumpets. Recently described on my favourite podcast as being the top vessel for butter of all foods, and I can think of no compliment higher than that.

These are the actual crumpets we've made, dear lord they're good...

But you don't have to stop at butter, get some jams on top, or beans, or Marmite, or cheese, or chutneys. But don't do what I saw a French couple do outside Sainsbury's in 1998 (it stuck in my memory) and just eat them untoasted, and dry, straight out the pack, that's weird. Crisp, hot, and dripping in butter, as the bread god intended.


Closest I could find to a god of bread was Demeter, the Greek goddess of grain (amongst other things), which I guess means she presides over beer as well. Not a bad gig that...
