What is the Beijing Broads?

The Beijing Broads is an all-female improv troupe dedicated to bringing fun to audiences around the city. Ranging from beginners to experienced, our goal is to give women a space to feel comfortable getting their feet wet in the Beijing improv scene.

The group was initially started in 2015 by five female improvisers who experienced how women tend to make themselves smaller in spaces and on stage when in a male-dominated group. They had at heart to give space to women to be silly, try their voices, not be ladies and just play. 

Through the years the team has welcomed new members, and let go of those returning home. After a few months of adjustments, the Broads are re-igniting the passion to continue building up a diverse group and get up on stage again.

What does Beijing Broads do?

Practicing and performing around in Beijing, we show an aspect of women's power in creating fun and connections, between ourselves and amongst all others -- women, men, kids, elderly, cats, dogs and everyone and everything else. 

To us, improv goes beyond comedy to also help us reflect on real moments and stories in our lives. We bring waves of laughter, but also beyond. 

Starting in 2017, the Beijing Broads have been making donations with their show proceeds to Educating Girls from Rural China (EGRC), which helps young women from impoverished families, single parents, or otherwise challenged households in Western China, finish high school and attend university. Our shows will continue to contribute to young women's empowerment in China. 

We are Recruiting!

Who are we looking for?

We are seeking passionate individuals who identify themselves as female, while also attaining the following qualifications:

1. Fluent in English

2. Have some theatre, Improv or other performing experiences

3. Able to join the weekly practice at least two or three times a month 

4. Open-minded and a great collaborator

What will you get?

• Rehearsal workshop led by actresses with 5+ years experience;
• Improv and theatre skills;
• A lovely community to support each other;
• Performance opportunity at least once every two months.

Summer: Broads is an incredible place that allows women the space to try multiple characters regardless of gender. Because of the team's donation, many girls in rural china have the chance to have education and better lives. 

Xuebi (雪碧):Broads shows everyone that there is no such thing women cannot think, cannot say or cannot do. We use improv  to break the walls of stereotypes and create space for equitable conversations.
