A new view of love among Chinese young people

Nowadays, many Chinese college students have their different views of finding love and marriage. Many students don’t want to get married and have children in the future.

A survey in China showed that 60 percent of college students didn’t plan to get married and only 15 percent of them want to get married and have children. More than half of university students have no experience of dating and they do not consider it is necessary.

“I don't want to get married because I think there are quite a few risks associated with marriage nowadays. For example, women may suffer domestic violence in marriage, which is difficult to prosecute in China, and divorce is much more difficult than marriage,” said Jingyun Su, 23, law student. “Also, marriage and childbirth can be discriminatory in the workplace and this is something that concerns me a lot. Many companies will not hire female employees because women need maternity leave to give birth.”

Jack Zhang, 19, business student, said, “Falling in love is a huge waste of money. I prefer to use the money to do other interesting things such as buy a camera and go travel. I have many hobbies and they waste a lot of my money.”

According to the survey, 90 percent of college students think economic conditions have an important influence on romantic relationships. The education background and family are also important. This is why most young people are very cautious about falling in love and getting married. This is very different from the Chinese concept in the past, and many young people are troubled by the fact that their elders believe that people must get married and have children.
