"Do"s and "Don‘t"s in China: addressing friends

 In this episode, we will teach you how to address friends.



01

请这么做 DO

陆离,王娜娜(一般情况)

Lu Li, Wang Nana (in general)


娜娜,杰伦(如果名字是两个字,可以省去姓,只叫名字)

Nana, Jielun (If the given name has two words, you can drop the last name and use the given name alone.)

 

 娜 (如果名字是一个字,女生的话,可以只叫单名字)

Na (If a girl’s given name has only one word, you can address her just by the single word.)

 

倩倩(如果名字是一个字,女生的话,可以重复名字)

Qianqian (If a girl’s given name has only one word, you can address her by doubling the single word.)

 

小倩(如果名字是一个字,女生的话,可以叫小+名)

Little Qian (If a girl’s given name has only one word, you can also address her by “Little + her given name”.)

 

倩儿(如果名字是一个字,女生的话,可以叫名+儿)

Qianr (If a girl’s given name has only one word, you can also address her by “her given name + er”.)

 

可乐(关系很好的朋友之间,可以叫绰号或昵称)

Cola (Between good friends, you can address each other by nickname or endearment.)



请别这么做 DON'T

 离 (如果名字是一个字,男生的话,一般不叫单字,太女性化)

Li (If a boy’s given name has only one word, we usually don’t address him by the single word, since that may sound too feminine.)

 

离离(如果名字是一个字,男生的话,一般不叫重复名字,太女性化)

Lili (If a boy’s given name has only one word, we usually don’t address him by doubling the single word, since that may sound too feminine.)

 

离儿(如果名字是一个字,男生的话,一般不叫名+儿,太女性化)

Lili (If a boy’s given name has only one word, we usually don’t address him by “his given name + er”, since that may sound too feminine.)

请这么做 DO

娜姐;轩妹;离哥(根据实际年龄或性格特征叫名字+哥/姐/妹)

Sieter Na, Sister Xuan, Bro Li (Address your friends by “given name + ge/jie/mei according to their actual age or character.)


请别这么做 DON'T

小王;小陆(比较客气)

Little Wang; Little Lu (too courteous)


陆先生,王女士(太正式)

Mr. Lu, MS. Wang (too formal)

请这么做 DO

老陆;老王(年纪比较大的人称呼朋友,或者用来称呼多年好友)

Lao Lu; Lao Wang (Used by older people to address their friends or by friends for many years to address each other.)

请别这么做 DON'T

陆大哥,王大姐(中老年不太熟悉的人之间的称呼)

Older Brother Lu, Older Sister Wang (A salutation used by middle-aged and old people who are not familiar with each other.)

*女生之间可以手牵手,可以挽手臂,这在中国是很正常的

* Girls often go hand in hand or arm in arm, which is very common in China.
