China's New “Village Supermodel” Turns Trash into Fashion

Crystal Huang GICexpat 2020-06-13

What’s the first thing to pops into your mind when you read or hear the word ‘supermodel’?

Long legs? Fashionable?

This is what we’re mostly accustomed to seeing online and in magazines.

But what if we told you that Chinese man by the name of Lu Xianren has defied the norms and expectations of the modeling world by becoming the first “village supermodel”?

From the autonomous region of Guangxi Zhuang in southern China, Lu has shown his talented designing skills with unique surroundings that have caught the attention of many netizens across the country.

“He should be on an international runway!” one user posted. “He’s got the talents of a real designer.”

Without any professional training, he practiced on his own and eventually found the essence of supermodeling!

Woven bags, broken fishing nets, plastic bags, rubber gloves…

He has managed to turn rubbish and discarded items into fashionable clothing to wear and post with.

Even on the country road, his confidence and aura are like walking on the international runway.

But in reality, there is no runway. No bright lights.

What he does have is nature. Lots of it.

And abandoned run-down factories.

His vision and sense of fashion transcend glamorous stages and big-name brands.

Working with such raw materials and innate talent, Lu Xianren knows how to transform his surroundings into creative and emotionally engaging experiences.

His style is one of a kind.

At only 20 years old today, this young man has been dreaming of becoming a supermodel since childhood after watching runway shows on TV.

When his classmates were busy playing games, Lu cut clippings at home.

But the road he is taking towards fashion success is not an easy one. Many people, including his own family, don’t understand what he’s occupying his time with, and don’t support his passion.

Although he had a job that everyone thought was "normal," he never forgot about his dream. So whenever he had time, Lu would make bold garments out of the material at his disposal.

To show how dedicated he was to his passion for fashion, he once made an outfit using a thick blanket, which took him a few days to put together.

However, after walking in 40-degree weather with it, Lu suffered from a heat stroke.

Despite all the hardships and criticism, he has also won the hearts and admiration of millions of netizens across China and the world.

The creative genius one must have to transform garbage into fashionable wear is very inspiring.

Want to know the craziest part in all of this?

All he’s using to capture all those incredible moments are his phone and a selfie stick.

That’s it.

It’s easy for people to judge someone by the way they dress, especially in more rural parts of China where they may not be used to seeing someone dressing the way Lu dresses.

But that never stopped him from working towards his goal of becoming a supermodel.

So don’t ever let anyone else make you feel regret and doubt.

You’re awesome.

You’ve got this.
