19-Year-Old Firefighter Goes Viral When the Video Shows...

GiC Team GICexpat 2020-06-13

This is the touching story of Jihou NiuPei, a young firefighter who has recently made the news and became one of the most searched topics online, but not for the reason you might be expecting.

In a recorded and uploaded video, Jihou was spotted sitting on a sidewalk, stuffing many buns in his mouth.

The person filming the scene asked, "How many buns have you had so far?"

He answered, "This is the 11th baozi," with a happy smirk on his face.

At 3:30 PM on August 10, the Fire & Rescue squad in Suzhou, Jiangsu province came out to minimize the damages of the flood caused by the devastating typhoon Lekima. Three rescue sites had been identified and in need of immediate service.

Unsurprisingly, these young men felt exhausted and hungry after a long day’s work outside draining water, and skipped meals to focus on their work.

Luckily for them, someone from their team had picked up a few buns along the way back to the unit and gave them to their men.

Baozi became their dinner.

At only 19 years old, Jihou Niupei, originally from Liangshan in Sichuan and of Yi nationality, warmed everyone’s hearts on social media: “He still looks like a child,” one user commented after watching the video, urging him to come back home safe and sound.

To keep his online popularity going, his fellow firefighters shared the video on their own channels, feeling proud for braving natural disasters at such a young age.

In the end, everyone except Jihou shared the video. “I was worried that my mom would see me like this and call me again,” he said. “She gets worried very easily.”

He then added, “One of the comments I read was really touching. The user said ‘Firefighters are working hard to keep us safe! So whenever you’re off duty, please go home safely!’”

Sadly, it’s not uncommon for public servants like firefighters to skip meals. Always on call, these men put their lives at risk to keep everyone else in our communities away from danger. And we truly, genuinely, love them for it.

Video:

From the bottom of our hearts, we thank them for their service and hope that there will be no more casualties found following the typhoon’s wrath.
