Since When Can You Go Karting on the Streets of China??

GiC Team GICexpat 2020-06-13

Shanghai is no stranger to bizarre scenes taking place around the city, and this was once again confirmed recently when a Weibo user reported seeing someone driving a toy go-kart near Dahua Road in the Baoshan district.

After hearing about this unusual activity, police forces connected with the Dahua Xincun Police Station in the area to investigate this further.

It was later confirmed that the go-kart driver was a resident of the community called Mr. Ye.

Can you imagine someone going karting on the road, out in the open, so blatantly?!

In a rush to get to his company’s office 300 meters away from his home, Mr. Ye decided to take his six-year-old grandson’s go-kart for a quick spin down the road. He had bought it for your grandson a month prior.

Here’s the full story: On the morning of June 23rd, Mr. Ye took his grandson to go karting around the neighborhood when he suddenly received an emergency call from his company.

With very little time left to go home and take his car, he decided to make his usual commute to work a bit more fun by taking the kart to his office.

He felt quite remorseful for what he had done, particularly after his family had seen him on the internet. For only 200-300 meters, he certainly could have walked the short distance… legally.

The Baoshan Police department has seized the kart in accordance with Article 74 of the Shanghai Road Traffic Regulations, which stipulate that unregistered vehicles driven in public shall be impounded and are subject to a fine.Mr. Ye was fined RMB 1,000.

The Shanghai Traffic Police Department reminds the public that while Mr. Ye’s case is rare; we do often see vehicles on the road that are subject to law infringement, including unregistered cars and scooters.

Please be mindful of your city’s traffic violations to avoid such incidents, which may also put other people in danger. Be safe.
