Chinese Mother-in-Law Again Left Foreign Son-in-Law Speechless

Crystal Huang GICexpat 2020-01-09

Hey, do you remember last month we posted an article about a Chinese mother-in-law turning her foreign son-in-law's backyard into her personal vegetable garden in Australia?

Get the scoop if you missed it: How Chinese Mother-in-Law Left her Foreign Son-in-Law Speechless

This article sparked a lot of interest from our readers, so we decided to follow up.

After growing vegetables, Mrs. Yang's mother, the Chinese mother-in-law, tried her hand at stinky tofu.

In the video released by Mrs.Yang recently, you can see her enthusiastically sharing her stinky tofu and steam buns with her son-in-law. Encouraging him to eat by shrieks of, “yummy!” and his wife egging him on "Just one bite. A little bite."

The son-in-law took one whiff of it and I’m sure you can guess his reaction…

The brave man that he is, he still tried it!

But as many of us know, once you smell it, your tastebuds are overwhelmed and sure enough, you can see him dashing to the sink!

In the video, he is seen spitting out the stinky tofu and gargling water to wash out his mouth.

Besides making snacks for her son-in-law, Mrs.Yang's mother also likes to entertain her guests with these snacks.

Another video shows a large bowl of fried spareribs she’s prepared to share with her son-in-law's foreign friends. Delicious!

Many Chinese netizens responded that within Chinese culture it is hospitable and tradition to share these treats and a way to spread her love. While many others think she is being unfriendly and pushing her differences on others.

The most recent video on this family that broke the internet is showing Mrs. Yang‘ mother buying loads of chicken manure preparing for the garden. In the video you see her son-in-law is prepared to swim; walking out to his backyard in swim trunks and towel in tow only to be left speechless upon seeing…or rather smelling, the stinky chicken manure.

Comments range from “this is too much, she is so disrespectful” to "it’s practical to grow your own vegetables".

Although there are cultural differences, within every family there needs to be respected.

In older generations, especially those of many Chinese, farming is part of the culture.

However, once you’ve set foot in another country where the culture is different, you should understand and respect local customs.

What are your thoughts on these videos between mother and son-in-law?
