Robert Lloyd Schellenberg, a Canadian drug smuggler, was sentenced to death on Monday, Jan 14th at the Dalian Intermediate People's Court in northeastern China's Liaoning Province.

All of his personal assets will also be confiscated.

On Tuesday, Jan 15th, China's Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying spoke of this matter at a press conference after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused China of 'arbitrarily' sentencing a Canadian to death for drug smuggling.

She said, "the information released by the Dalian Intermediate People's Court is very specific and detailed. The defendant, named Lloyd Schellenberg, participated in organized international drug trafficking and smuggled 222.035 kg of crystal meth with others. The facts of the crime charged by the public prosecutor are clear, and the evidence is solid and sufficient.”

“Drug crime is a serious crime severely punished around the world. It presents extremely harmful risks to society, and China has been equally harsh. We urge Canadian citizens and its government to respect the rule of law and respect China's judicial sovereignty.”
