The Virus Hasn't Stopped Stop This Chinese Dama From...

Crystal H GICexpat 2020-02-13

In the midst of such tragic times, a few unsung heroes took it upon themselves to uplift the spirit of thousands around them, both in person and online, unintentionally and on purpose.

This is their story.

The city of Wuhan has turned its sports stadium and two convention centers into mobile hospitals to accommodate growing number of patients, offering a total of 3,400 beds. Medical staff have been dispatched to all three facilities to tend to the care of those who have tested positive for the novel coronavirus, yet are not showing severe symptoms.

Needless to say, such additional resources are unarguably required.

In another section of these new hospitals, a patient found online fame for… quite the opposite.

On the same day of their opening, a video was uploaded online showing a lovely Chinese Dama dancing in the middle of the hospital ward as if she was back at her usual neighborhood plaza.

Her optimism and energy took the internet by storm, in times when we need all the positivity we can get to overcome this pneumonia outbreak.

Video:

The patient surnamed ‘He’, has remained positive throughout this entire experience. She chitchats with other patients to share anecdotes about her daily life and posts about it on social media as well.

She reads, socializes, and stays active by dancing around whenever she feels like it.

The best part? Her energy is so “contagious” that other patients have begun to follow her footsteps and dance along!

“It’s a difficult time for everyone, especially for all our medical workers,” said He, adding that patients should remain calm and cooperate with hospital staff so they can work together to defeat the disease.

Other patients have been spotted exercising to make sure their bodies are strong.

Staying positive is half the battle.

Despite his unfortunate situation, one of the admitted patients showed so much strength and peace while staying at one of the hospitals that he quickly gained widespread attention across social media after the following picture was shared online.

The photo shows the 39-year-old, named ‘Fu’, reading Francis Fukuyama’s “The Origins of Political Order”. Quite an unusual pastime when you’re being treated for a potentially deadly pathogen.

His calmness while facing the virus has won high praise from netizens all over the world, including the book’s author himself who retweeted the image via his own Twitter account.

Although Fu lives in the United States where he’s conducting post-doctoral research in addition to teaching at Florida State University, he contracted the virus while visiting his parents back in Wuhan just recently.

After hearing about his growing popularity online, Fu thanked everyone for their support, yet urged them to refocus their attention on all the medical workers who are giving their blood, sweat and tears to fight the disease and take care of as many patients as physically possible.

While many of us would lament about our conditions, these patients are showing unwavering faith in their ability to fight 2019-nCoV through optimism and community.

What an inspiration!
